Windows XP Recovery Advice Needed

Ok PC geeks. Can anyone help? I seem to have lost my active desktop. Let me explain what happened.

This weekend, my wife and I had "Road Runner" cable TV and Internet installed. The TV works great. The Internet, not so great. It worked initially but then would periodically cease functioning. Several calls to the "customer service help line" consisted of little more than unplugging and replugging all of the cords and cables, all to no avail. They claimed to have attempted to 'ping' the modem, and could not. So I have a service call pending. But now, that may have not been the issue.

Because I could not get Road Runner to load, I attemped to reconnect to my still active, but no longer used SBC Internet. I reconnected another modem. I then proceeded to [re]install the software for it. Midway through the process, the computer attempted to "read" the modem. It never could, despite double and triple checking the Ethernet cord and going so far as installing a NEW Ethernet cord. So now I believe that the problem might be internal; i.e. my Ethernet card/modem might be bad. That, I am told, should be a relatively easy fix.

And meanwhile, I have lost my NEW: Xtra Airways (USA) and OLD: Casino Express (USA)">XP Desktop. I don't know if the two problems are related or not. But when I start my PC, it boots and cycles up as normal. My desktop comes on. BUT after about 10 seconds, all of the icons, shortcuts, and taskbars disappear. The ONLY thing on the screen is the wallpaper picture. No other applications of any kind are visible. Not even the "Start" button.

I can press "Cont/Alt/Del" and get the dialog box that shows "performances, "logoff", "task manager", etc. In there, I can do a "file/"new task" and open up all of my files, spreadhseets, pictures, media files, etc. I can also access most, if not all of the other programs (Word, excell, etc.).

But obviously, SOMETHING is wrong. I've tried doing several soft and hard reboots. But to no avail.

Can anyone give any tips on restoring my active desktop? Preferably-if possible-without reformatting all of my local drives (i.e. erasing all of my pictures, videos, spreadsheets)?

Does Explorer.exe appear in the Processes tab of Task Manager? If not, select File->New Task and type Explorer.exe. If that works, reboot and see if the problem's fixed.

Sound like your profile is jacked, but too early to make that call.

Anyways, are you running your pc through a switch/router that is then connected to your modem? I never run the software provided, find out what your settings are (IP, username, password, etc) and manually set it in the switch (or pc if pc is connected direct to modem).

If you are running through a switch, chances are the program cant see the modem, because your switch is in the way.

Just an FYI, I find the software SBC provides is be extremely useless and not required. I use SBC for DSL but didn't let their software touch my computer.

As for your current issue, that is a bit over my head. Sorry.

What do I do after running "Explore"? Will that execute some kind of recovery? Are there prompts that I have to follow? What am I looking for after entering that query? And do I have to "browse" for that file? If so, where?

I can tell that you are stressed over this, take a deep breath. Chances are very good that you have not lost anything.

Ok with that said, Im limited on this but

My Computer > c: > documents and settings > whatever your profile is > desktop (or documents)

Everything should be there, if so, save to a dvd or cd.

Let us know if you were able to save all the stuff you need. Theres more to do, but this is a good start.

My recommendation would be to run system Restore to the day before any of this started to revert the computer to a state when it was working and follow the instructions to installing the ISP software you choose. Also I am with Rich and do not recommend installing any software that comes with Routers and they attempt to control your network settings, which is something I much prefer Microsoft doing.

I've had to do that three times in the past few years. System Restore has always gotten me out of a jam.

Go to task manager and go to run, type in 'explorer.exe' then hit run. That should restore your desktop. Is this the first time you are using the eathernet cord to hook up to your computer? Are you connecting the modem via eathernet or USB? If it is USB, check your power management settings to make sure that your computer isn't shutting anything off to 'save power'. It could also be your eathernet card. I always try to take some steps to figure out what is wrong before I completely restore my system. That should always be your last resort.
