Hello
After careful consideration, me & my family plan to spend New Year's Eve in NYC (Sydney came in close second). I've arranged to fly to IAD from SIN and for my family to arrive from multiple points in the Americas in IAD as well, spend a few days in DC, and then drive to NYC.
A few questions:
Will it be cheaper to get a serviced apartment rather than a hotel?
What time should we head over to Time's Square to get a good location and any tips on the celebration you can give me?

Early, early, early. My best friend lives in Manhattan and he's been there several times. He's told me that you've got to pretty much spend the whole day down there to get a good spot and get through security, etc.
Good luck. Maybe some other people can provide a little more insight.

Quoting DeltaAVL (Reply 3): From what I've heard, probably 6-7 am early.
Geez!! Are you serious?? Coal, you should plan on doing Seattle some year for New Years. I go there every year and it is incredible! The area around Space Needle is open most of the night and the fireworks from the Needle can be seen from all over the city. I hope you and your family have a great time in NYC and I hope to see you in Seattle for New Years sometime!
GO CANUCKS!!

I'm not surprised! I would imagine the crowds are huuuge! People from all over the world coming to see the ball drop.

Yeah, it is in my list of to do things to go to Seattle. My parents where there and in Vancouver last summer and told me it was beautiful!
However, and no offense, but I was looking for one of the top places to go for New Year's. We had intended to go to Sydney to see the fireworks on the Harbour Bridge, but New York proved logistically easier for all of us.

The Westin Times Square, the Millennium Broadway, the W Times Square and the DoubleTree are some of the nicer hotels in the Times Square area. My dad managed a few NYC hotels including the Millennium Broadway and has indicated the Marriot Grand Marquis leaves a lot to be desired.

If you want the front row then you need to be there by 7-8am..however once you get in there, you cannot leave for food, drink, call of nature or anything without losing your place. It's like being in a cage but you don't have a top on the cage.

Yeah goto Sydney. As great as NYC would bet forget getting into time square at 6 am and then having to wait around for 18 hours. In SYD that 18 hours could be spent sleeping, shopping or enjoying the wonderful city that Sydney is. You can turn up at about 7pm and still get a decent spot. Unlike NYC Syd has numerous areas to be able to enjoy the fireworks (which are at 9pm and midnight) and the many activities on offer.
