We Will suffer together. It pisses me off that if you read all the articles, you see Wang and Snow try to spin the facts. Do you ever check out The sound tigers?? They have a gorgeous arena and I would love to know how the kids are down there.
Burke loves Bertuzzi so this does not surprise me. He's one of not that many GMs in the league who would take a chance on Bertuzzi.

13 goals last season THIRTEEN. If he keeps playing like that
$50,000,000 / 7 seasons = $7,142,857.14 a season
$7,142,857.14 / 13 goals = $549,450.55 a goal. What a bargain!!
I'm glad the Sens moved Preissing, he was very average. Hopefully Murray has the stones to make some good deals for us, if not we'll have to hope and pray that our numerous Russian prospects come right!

He's more of a character player than an offensive star (as you may have deduced already). He won a cup with Dallas, but has bounced back and forth between the big leagues and the minors throughout his career.

We used to use him as a 4th liner on the Stars. Good, hard-nosed player with checking instincts, but not a real threat to score. Most teams would use him more for depth and an energy burst than put him on the ice all the time. He used to play maybe 7-8 minutes/game when he played with the Stars.
I like what the Pens and Caps have done so far. Same with the Avs and Kings. Rafalski was a great pickup for Detroit and should be even better than Schneider. Personal opinion, I think the Flyers and Rangers have a good chance of being screwed in the long run by their signings of Briere for 8 years and Gomez for 7 years, respectively. I'm not a fan of contracts that stretch more than 3-4 years, especially when the player is going to be taking home a large chunk of change every year. It hamstrings the team going into the future, especially if the player fails to perform (Yashin).
So, big winners so far (in my book only):
Pens - Add Sydor, Sykora, re-sign Saubarin and Whitney
Caps - Add Poti, Kozlov, and Nylander. Nylander should help Ovechkin a lot, and Poti should contribute well on the PP and with his puck movement.
Rangers - Drury and Gomez are great players. I think Gomez' contract is too long, but for the next couple years at least he should provide a good boost.
Avs - Ryan Smyth is a pest and a helluva good player. Scott Hannan is underrated. Great pickups for 4-5 years while the two should be in their primes.
Kings - Big splash today. Calder, Nagy, Handzus, Preissing. They pick up a good C, a very solid D, and two serviceable wingers.
Big losers...well, we know already that the Isles lost just about everyone who knows how to put on a pair of skates and Buffalo lost their co-captains. But there are a couple teams who have not done anything and should have pushed hard to grab a couple of the guys who have already signed. Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto, and Montreal fit in this boat. Dallas definitely fits in here. The Sharks re-signed Thornton, but haven't signed anyone else to help improve the team. And the Devils have just decided to let one of their most creative offensive players and one of the best defensive players in the league leave town without a fight. Great job, guys.

I just took a look at the Rangers roster and though it may look like a huge improvement, they are really only stocked on their top 2 lines.
Figure this:
Jagr-Gomez-Straka
Pruka -Drury-Cullen (You can interchange Avery once he signs back on)
(This is the assumption that they are not signing Shanahan)
After those top 2 lines, here is who they are left with.
46 Daniel Girardi 23 6-2 200 R Welland, Ontario 4/29/84
55 David Liffiton 22 6-2 210 L Windsor, Ontario 10/18/84
8 Marek Malik 32 6-6 240 L Ostrava, Czechoslovakia 6/24/75
27 Paul Mara 27 6-4 219 L Ridgewood, New Jersey 9/7/79
22 Thomas Pock 25 6-1 210 L Klagenfurt, Austria 12/2/81
3 Michal Rozsival 28 6-2 210 R Vlasim, Czechoslovakia 9/3/78
34 Jason Strudwick 31 6-3 225 L Edmonton, Alberta 7/17/75

I just think people are jumping on the Ranger bandwagon a bit too prematurely. (Not saying at opening day they wont be the best team...just not right now)

I have to agree. having witnessed Yashin first hand I can tell you it is an albatross around the whole teams neck. Yashin never really put up bad numbers, but the fact that he had 10 years and 8 mill a year, his number just didn't justify that type of pay day and the fans and teamates let him know it. Gomez may fall into the same category. He has only scored more than 20 goals only once in his career.
Scott Burnisde commented on these long contracts and noted that it may hurt these teams in the fututre with the lack of positions for the youth in the organization. Not only do these players have long contracts, but many have NMC (No movement Clauses) in there as well.

Breaking Rumor news I had to add on from Eklund at Hockey Buzz.
"2:10 PM
"NY Islanders have worked out a potential major trade to a western conference team depending on that player waving his NTC. I will not write more out of fairness to the player, but I do think Isles fans should know they are burning up the phones trying to get something done here...It is aperfect fit for them.... just one of many things Snow has been working on for days."
Well, the Isles will need to trade away their future to get anything now. If they are doing a major trade it will involve at least one and possibly two first round picks over the next couple years. Looking at their roster, they need the most help at Center (they need help everywhere, but only have 2 C's on their roster right now). If it is a Western Conference team and a big name center with a no trade clause, the options are narrowed pretty well. Modano, Marleau, Morrison (I think), or Arnott. The Stars cannot afford to lose Modano either in terms of production or good will to the community. San Jose is working on an extension with Marleau to keep Joe Thornton happy (Marleau and Thornton are best friends). Morrison, while not the captain of the Canucks, leads with his heart and soul on the ice. Arnott is a Predator and the Preds are having a fire sale while picking up young players and draft picks.
My prediction if this rumor pans out: Arnott to the Preds for a 1st round pick next year, a 3rd round pick one of the next two years, and some 19 year old kid from the Isles system.
The Preds win because they continue their youth movement before the sale. The Isles win because they get a leader who can score and who has name recognition. However, the Isles will also be forfeiting major pieces of their future while the Preds would fully, completely be throwing the towel on the next 2-3 seasons.

How so in what way? I've been there dozens of times and I love the place, it is great place to see the up and coming Islanders and they aren't that bad either, I actually prefer them over the Wolfpack which I've seen a couple times as well, despite me being a Rangers fan. Not to mention they hold dozens of fun events there all year round. Although they tend to be worse than the Hartford Wolfpack.

yeah i was curious to see how the prospects play. Up in the coliseum we seldomly see the youngsters come up and when they do they get limited time. I think I may take in a game this year there.

So i have seen that on all the message boards and some are even throwing around Rick nash as well (wishful thinking). At this point the Isles are fairly stripped down in regards to prospects to give up unless they give up the 06 pick in Okposo which in my mind would be insanity. They must hold on to something.

He bounced around on lines all season. Most teams, he'd be a third or fourth liner, but for us, he spent most of the season bouncing between the top two lines. After the trade deadline, he was relegated back down to 3rd and 4th line duty with the addition of Dupuis (who we did re-sign right before the Free Agency period started).
Quoting PlateMan (Reply 2): But I am an Islanders fan and we are so screwed now. We were screwed before, but now its just all over. The Coliseum and team are literally fallling apart
You're not as screwed as the Buffaslugs. Lost Drury and Briere. If Miller goes down next season, they will be totally screwed.
Here's who the Thrashers have signed so far:
Pascal Dupuis (re-signed just prior to the start of the signing period)
Todd White (From the Wild)
Eric Perrin (From the Lightning)
Ken Klee (From the Avs)
Slava Kozlov remains unsigned, and based on what other forwards with similar stats to his this past season have gotten, he won't come cheap. We've offered him a 3 year deal worth between $10-12 Million, but considering Kariya got 3 years, $18 million from the Blues (averages 6 million/season) and Jason Blake getting $12 million from the Leafs (averages $4 million/year), it may take a offer that averages at least $4.5-5.5 million a season. That may be more than the Thrashers will be willing to pay (especially since Kovalchuk and Hossa take a nice chunk of change already for next year's salary), and as a result, could lead to the money earmarked to re-sign Kozlov could be used instead to sign another defenseman and a plan B player (Yashin's name has been dropped, but the team hasn't yet contacted his agent.).

Some nights it looks pro, some nights they look like the couldn't even beat a high school team, it really varies, but as of late I've seen some decent playing from them.
Apparently (as per TSN here in Canada, on TV no less) Ed Jovanovski has been asked by the Coyotes to waive his NTC. I don't really see anybody on the Islanders that could appeal to ol' Gretz except for Sillinger. And I only suggest him because he's the only player in excess of 35 years old and has seen better days.

Everything I've heard about Shanahan is that he's either going back to the Rangers or retiring. Rangers have Lundqvist, Avery and I believe Hossa to resign, but Shanahan might be willing to do a deal where he's paid a very low base salary (which goes against the cap) but heavily weighted with incentives (which do not go against the cap for him due to I believe a longevity in the NHL clause in the CBA).
