With this many members, there have got to be quite a few web gurus around here.

Who around here works with the internet, and what do you do?

Anyone here work with affiliate marketing?

Anyone have an opinion about advertising with Google Adwords vs. Yahoo Search Marketing?

Any ideas on future trends of the web? What's next for video?

Anyone use a blog primarily for marketing purposes? How successful has it been?

I run three of my own servers...

Live Server:
Fedora 6, running Apache, MySQL, PHP5 (always stable)
Two 500gb drives, RAID 0 (mirrored)

Backup Server:
Same setup as above, just some older hardware.

Testbed Server:
Debian (forget what version), Apache, MySQL, PHP5 (always latest)
Two 160gb drives, RAID 0

I also run my own business doing web design, web application design (think of stuff like Google Documents, just not quite as big or as nice. But applications like that. Usually done in PHP and company), and I host most of my clients after building their site. Some, who want more bandwidth, I refer to other companies.

Just getting into the whole flash-based applications now. I'll never do flash based websites... gets you a horrible google page rank, since google can't read the text, and its usually just plain annoying. But, flash based applications are awesome.

So yeah, basically a webmaster and Linux system admin. Stinks when a server goofs up... I have to find out why and fix it within 15 minutes, or I start refunding customers. But, thats why I have a live backup.  Smile Just swap the incoming local IP addresses, and the other one is live!

That's a good idea.

Embedding Flash doesn't actually affect PageRank. It robs a page of keyword content, and without sufficient content, search engines have difficulty knowing what the page is all about. I know what you mean about Flash though, it doesn't do me a lot of good unless I'm creating some sort of animate banner or something.

Are you signed up with the web hosting companies as an affiliate advertiser?

So yeah, basically a webmaster and Linux system admin.

While technically an administrator, I'm not a webmaster yet. For some reason, I have this thing about avoiding learning about HTML, PHP, JAVA, and Flash. But I can do a mean database for non-HTML/PHP applcations.  Wink

So this causes a quandry for me. While I can do text based SQL queries, It'd more efficient for me if I've got a GUI interface that PHP can provide (PHPmyadmin) but setting up PHPmyadmin to work on Apache has been nothing but pain.  banghead
