Who Will Win The World Series (MLB)? (Part 2)

3 months ago, a few of us chose some teams as to who would be baseball's national champion. Those picks?

Boston92: Boston Red Sox
PIA777: Chicago Cubs
Oli80: New York Mets
Pipo777: Arizona Diamondbacks
KaiGwyer: Minnesota Twins
Wrenchbender: Toronto Blue Jays
Thepilot: Detroit Tigers
FlyDeltaJets87: Cincinnati Reds
LHMARK: Los Angeles Angels
TLG: Milwaukee Brewers
Piercey: Houston Astros
ORFflyer: Atlanta Braves
Yellowstone: San Francisco Giants
ATCGOD: Seattle Mariners
YOWza: Wahington Nationals
Galapagapop: San Diego Padres

As only 16 teams were chosen (which is half of all teams), one would beg the question, "Will ANY of these teams win the world series?"

These are the current top 16 teams in the league:

Detroit
Boston
LA Angels
Cleveland
Seattle
NY Mets
LA Dodgers
Milwaukee
San Diego
NY Yankees
Chicago Cubs
Atlanta
Arizona
Minnesota
Philadelphia
Colorado

How did we do?
Well, 11 of the 16 teams chosen are in the 'actual' top 16. Who was not? Toronto (17), Cincinnati (29), Houston (27), San Fransisco (26), and Washington (25).

Those stats also means that 5 teams are in the 'actual' top 16 that are not on the list as one chosen by us. Cleveland is one of those teams ranked 4th in all of MLB. That could be bad news. Only time will tell though and we shall see.

At the beginning of the season, after the Zito acquisition, I honestly believed the Giants had a shot at at least the playoffs. Of course, I was dead wrong.

So now, I think, provided they get a decent pitcher at the deadline, Cleveland will take it all.

My WS Pick Mets vs. Indians, Indians in 6.

I'm sticking with my Braves, just because I'm a Braves fan.

BUT - Somebody's got to start beating the Mets. The Dodgers look real good out west, and so far, the Central seems to be coming down to the Brew Crew and the Cubbies. If the Cubs get to the postseason, I'll wish them all the best unless they are playing the Braves.  Smile

In the AL, the Sox currently have a seven game advantage, but we all know how the late season can be for them. I still think they will win the East. In the Central, the Tigers and Indians are at the top with the Tigers holding on to a two game lead right now. It's really a toss-up there, and I'll pick the Indians to win it. Out west I think the Angels will hold on to win the division.

WS - Braves vs. Sox
Braves in seven.

Yea, but of all teams, you were swept AT HOME by the Cincinnati Reds. So October looks doubtful for you.  wink

Besides, even if the Braves do make the playoffs, we all know they'll choke big time, just as they did in every postseason except two in the 1990's (1994 because of the Strike, and 1995 when they beat the Indians).

Quoting Boston92 (Thread starter):

I know some a.netters chose the Angels and the Yankees. IIRC, TomInMSY (I think that's the screenname) chose the Angels, and N1120A tried to take them from Tom, claiming that since he lived in LA he should get first pick at the Angels.

Now if only the Yankees could have played all season like they've played since the beginning of June.

I wouldn't mind if they started playing again like they did before June...  Silly

I'd love to see the Mariners reaching the playoffs, but wouldn't put money on it yet. Even though the Angels show some weakness as well right now.

Sadly, so did a lot of past Octobers..... (as you mentioned)

Still - I'm a Braves fan, and have been since I was a kid. I'm rooting for them to go to the series, and win it! And at three games back in late July, they have a solid chance.

LHMARK had the Angels first, and I don't think anyone chose the Yankees. Anyway...here is the original thread:

The Tigers are the best team in baseball, and every fan who pays attention to the game knows it. They are the highest rated teams currently in the ESPN and SI polls. And are winning without their critical bullpen set up men, Rodney and Zumaya.

If those guys come back and are healthy (indications are they are on track and feel great), the Tigers will be in great shape for a very deep October run. Their line-up is relentless, and overall the pitching is stable and well-rested; none of the pitchers have logged too many innings.

Finally, after the debacle in last year's WS, I promise you no team is more hungry than Leyland's squad, and he will keep them that way.

Go get'em Tigers!!!!

What? Even if you are not drinking the Red Sox Cool aid, there is no way that Boston (best team in baseball) does not make it to October.

With the return of Jon Lester, as well as Curt Schilling, and a bullpen that keeps getting better, there is no way that Boston lets New York have this years pennant. New York will be lucky if they even have a chance at the Wild Card.

I have the Mets all the way personally. If Pedro comes out of the box on fire we will be ok. David Wright needs to up it a notch at the plate though and Delgado needs to stop swinging for the long ball and focus on the small ball because it is not so bad to lay a bunt down here and there.
