My uncle Edward V. Dolan was killed or lost in Vietnam, March 12, 1975 a few weeks before Saigon fell. He was flying as a passenger aboard a commercial Air Vietnam DC-4 when it was shot down by NVA forces while flying over Binh Gio village, Chu Prong District, Gia Province in the central highlands near the town of Pleiku. The aircraft was on its way from Vientiane, Laos, to Saigon. He was with others. The Australian Embassy in Saigon at the time of the crash confirmed that a "Mr. Graham Lewis, charge d'affaires in the North Vietnamese capital was one of the 20 passengers." The other two Americans were George C. Miller, an official of the U.S. Agency for International Development in Vientiane, Laos and Robert Seidl. My uncle Edward and Seidl were "employed" by Moore Business Forms. The bodies of passengers and crew were never found. My family and I wonder what my uncle was doing there at that time and why? I recently asked a co worker of my uncle Edward why my uncle was there in the first place. He told me everyone in his office asked themselves and others "what the hell was he doing there!?" when they heard of his death. My uncle was not in the military. He was a civilian. I think he might have also been a spook (CIA or related). If my uncle was a spook then God Bless him, I've no problem with that. My family and I want to know why he was flying from Laos to Saigon just weeks before the fall of Saigon and why he and the others were flying over in an unarmed civilian airliner over an area that was under the control of the NVA? A joint U.S. military/Vietnamese recovery team went to the crash site on January 10, 1994 and for two weeks interviewed two witnesses that provided firsthand information to the crash of the aircraft. A complete excavation of the site also took place. One human central incisor tooth, one gold ring and one UH-1H "Huey" helecopter aircraft data plate was recovered along with small bits of the DC-4 aircraft. The area had been thoroughly scavenged over the years. The specific information you have just read is part of an unclassified document from the U.S. State Department my father gave me before he passed away. It also contains coordinates determined by the trimble trimpack receiver using the global positioning system tracking four satellities (Indian Datum). I went to Vietnam with all this info. I found the site and spoke with the individuals mentioned. I got nowhere and the U.S goverment is keeping me at bay. I'm at a loss here. I'm asking for any and all help from you who read this. I would like to ask if you live in Australia would you please be a friend and look into the history of this Mr. Graham Lewis who was the Australian charge d' affaires in Hanoi during the end of the war and who was killed along with my uncle? Is there a way I can find the registration number of this Air Vietnam DC-4? It must be on file somewhere. Also, if there's anybody out there who has any advice as to how I could or should proceed with getting to the bottom of this mystery please email me or answer on the board. I know you all have familys of your own who you love and would do anything you could to find them if they were lost. Can you help me? Thank you.

Dear Pty:
I cannot help with your quest. But I find your long paragraph difficult to read. I have difficulty keeping my place. Try some paragraph breaks here and there.

I hope you find Eddy. My brother was lost at sea in a Helocopter incident, so I know the pain, loneliness and frustration.

I'm not sure if this would be helpful or not, but Texas Tech University in Lubbock, TX has a Vietnam Archive. From their website:

The Vietnam Archive houses a rapidly growing collection of original documents, published and unpublished works, and microfilm research collections relating to Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Archival staff are pleased to respond to specific, limited requests for research support; however, the staff will not undertake extensive research projects for individuals. For information, and to talk with Archival staff, call (806) 742-9010, fax (806) 742-0496 or e-mail livna@ttacs.ttu.edu.

Here is a link to their website.

If they can't help you in your request, then maybe they could at least advise you as to the best way to find the information you're looking for. Their website also has links to other archives. I hope this helps. Good Luck.

Here is some commentary about the very crash you were inquiring about. It mentions your Uncle Eddy and George C. Miller and Robert Seidl. Although it doesn't answer some of the specific questions you asked, it does give some background on the incident. Are you sure that your uncle was traveling as a passenger? These two reports, both with the same commentary, indicate that Edward V. Dolan and George C. Miller were Air America pilots and it almost sounds as if they were the ones piloting the aircraft when it was shot down.

I also found a little more info on this site:

http://aviation-safety.net/database/1975/750312-0.htm

It looks like the plane's registration number was XV-NUJ.

This website lists all the POW's (including civilians) for March 1975. There are several civilians (including your uncle) that are listed for 03/12/75. I'm assuming these were some of the other passengers on the plane.

LoneStarMike, that's great you found out all of that information to help Pty out. The internet is really amazing, especially in searching for information.

The Texas Tech Southwest Collection is the largest repository of Vietnam archives in the US. It is an EXCELLENT source to finding out virtually anything about the war. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful.

Good luck and God bless.
