Buy an Uzi if state turns prisoners loose on jails

Overcrowded facilities can't handle a horde of ex-felons

L. Brooks Patterson

Everybody should go out and buy a gun. I recommend an Uzi. If you don't like guns, then I suggest you buy a pair of guard dogs, preferably a pit bull and a Rottweiler.

You're going to need them.

There's a harebrained scheme that has some momentum in Lansing to reclassify as many as 200 felonies and magically convert them into 200 new misdemeanors.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm jumped on this proposal and says she favors it. It is a strange position indeed for the former attorney general of the state to adopt........The result will be inmates who should be in state prison are going to be in jail, and people who ought to be in jail are going to be in your neighborhood. And it all will be done in the name of cutting costs at the state Department of Corrections.

Isn't that the same Department of Corrections that allowed that a mentally ill inmate would not get treatment, later starve to death and get mistreated by being chained on his bed in solitary for up to 18 hours?

Wow, that like saying that we have too many planes on the ground for maintenance issues, so lets loosen up on the rules. It sounds like an "if you can't beat them join them mentality".

This is no joke. Prison overcrowding is a serious problem in a system that has problems enough. If we're not willing to give them money to put those people in jail, we gotta let them out. There aren't really any other options.

This is why I wish we had a little bit more of a cut-throat mentality when it comes to serious crimes.

"We gotta let them go" ????

Nope, we gotta keep them in prison/jail and take away their amenities. House them like the felons they are. Crowd them in. Let them kill each other off. Stop coddling them.

"We gotta let them go". Ridiculous dribble.

Why should we let them out? I certainly don't want people that should be in jail being released early and being a possible threat to my community. I agree with cut their luxuries - give them a metal bunk bed, bread, water and that's about it. No cable television, etc. They're in jail for a reason.

Horse crap. Felons don't deserve rights anymore, they gave up any rights they had as citizens, and in my opinion, as humans when they committed whatever felony landed them in prison.

A lot of prisons are like that already. Think of places like Attica, San Quentin, Marion. Those are bad-assed prisons that are literally a ticking time bomb.

Granholm '08, baby! Keep that union money running in!

It's so funny because whenever anyone who has no relation to Michigan, or least of all, Detroit, everyone has a terrible reaction. What a craphole.

Being a resident of Oakland County, MI.. I actually laughed when I heard Brooks' say that... Its totally in character for the guy. He's done a good job running the county for the past god knows how many years and keeps the morons in the city (aka mayor bling-bling and his city council full of retards) in check.

If you think about it, he has a point.

I didn't read anything in the constitution about giving rights to some but not others. US citizens in the US are protected by the constitution, be they in prison, in a hospital, or where ever.

I live in Wayne county and I have to agree with you completely.

Quoting FutureUALpilot (Reply 8):

Ever committed a crime? I bet you have and didn't even think you did, many of us have. Everyone has rights.

I had a criminal Justice professor in college tell me in 1995 (he had been a police officer for 25 years and Sheriff of Johnson County, Missouri), there are more criminals today because we have more things that are against the law.

Some inmates pay for their TVs and service.

I don't want them around my house either, but they will get out sooner or later anyway. Prisoners are released early all the time.

Quoting MCOflyer (Reply 12):

This county once had places for the mental cases to go, but most have been shut down. Many mental issues can be successfully treated with drugs, but without proper supervision who knows if they are even medicated.

Michigan spends more on prisons than it does on schools. I wonder about other states.
