I think this qualifies as CAR PORN. There were plenty of scenes of hands and fingers stroking supple leather seats or tracing sinuously along a steel curve. It was also very interesting the emphasis that was placed on ballistics and surviving undercarriage (bomb?) blasts. I guess it's the world we live in.

Very handsome car nevertheless.

I don't think the point of this car is that anyone NEEDS one, per se. Unless, of course, you're under threat of assassination.

Luxury cars in general are not made out of necessity, they're made because there are people out there willing to spend well into six digits on a car.

Folks, that's still a Mercedes!  no

Meaning, if you'd buy it, it will spend more time in the workshop than on the road in the first 2-3 years. Plus, you'll get "customer service" that's easily outperformed by Skoda or Hyundai. The times where Mercedes built quality cars are over. The only thing that still is "premium" is the price.

Stylish image films will not change that.

Isn't there a company out there that is selling a whole complete body kit for this car.

For somebody wanting to build a hot-rod that seems a whole lot better way to go then destroying a classic frame.

I see, but the armor should effect the performance of the car negatively, therefore I wouldn't want to have it - unless of course it is needed.

I wouldn't argue about that. My point was more why would anyone want a useless feature, that effects the performance and the costs negatively, in a car.

I would never build a hot rod for this car, pure and classic is how I like it.

Well if I was a billionaire, and money wasn't a problem, then I'd buy it just to have it, plus a "normal" one too I guess...

Park it in my garage with room for hundreds of cars and use it occasionally

I have to disagree with that. They're back now. Starting with the 07 S, they've brought their quality WAY back up. Look at the rating on the W221 vs. W220 especially when it first came out. MB realized the problem and they're climbing back up. Even the 2003 S500 my mom just bought is a significant upgrade over my uncle 2000 S430, not just cosmetic, but they changed a lot of their suppliers for the W220 for 2003-2006. His car has been in for Airmatic over 4 times, yet in the year that the W221 has been out I have heard of 1 Airmatic failure which was a major problem on the early build 220's. Jaguar's are top notch now too, and I don't just say that cause I work at the Jaguar dealership in my area.

I tend to agree with you.. I haven't driven the current S-class I've only been sitting in it, but I tried the old S-class, and there is a world of difference between the quality feeling between the previous and the current S-class. The current one seems very solid and feels like it is built of great quality.

Yes, and I heard the new C-Class is very well build as well.

That being said, Mercedes Guard cars are basically hand-crafted in a facility separated from the normal production line. Only Mercedes' most skilled, committed (and reticent) employees work there.

My boss has one. Very nice car, drives nice, with amazing features (lights up like a spaceship on the inside at night=exciting for me), but still falls into the "overkill" category for me. He has the AMG something-or-other version of that and his wife drives the SL 550 convertible.

As for service, he says that's just something he expects. It's a Mercedes, it has a million gadgets and sensors, it's going to spend some time in the shop.

Yeah I see what you mean. To be realistic, I'd be happy with the S350 and then spend the money on a lot of gadgets inside the car instead, if I had the money that is.... Not that I'd say no to an AMG though.. dont get me wrong  Wink

Sounds good, I'd love to hear that they are recovering. I have to admit that I never had a personal look on the current year's models. However, Mercedes has pissed off a lot of their customers here, and I'm afraid that they will have to perform for several years in a row to regain their trust.

It was not only their quality issues. The service they provided to their customers was ridiculous. 2 first-hand examples from relatives:

One had issues with his 2000 E-Class (after the guarantee expired). He was at the workshop of his local Mercedes branch 3 times. They exchanged several parts, but the problem kept showing. Finally, he tried an independent workshop. When he showed them the Mercedes workshop invoices, people could not believe their eyes. The Mercedes workshop actually charged him for exchanging parts that did not even exist in his car.

The other story from another relative was even better. After having brought his 2003 ML to the local branch workshop for the x-th time for various problems, he received a letter from his insurance company, where they asked him to give a statement regarding his recent accident. He was a bit surprised, as he had none.

Turned out that an employee from the workshop took the car home after work. And since the ML is so spacious, he drove to the local home-improvement market to make some purchases. Unfortunately, some guy on the parking lot crashed into the car, and they had to exchange the rear bumper.

Not only did they fail to inform their customer about this incident. Upon request, the workshop manager found all this completely normal. He claimed that they had so many problem fixes that they were not able to do test-drives after the repairs during working hours. So they encouraged their employees to take their customers' cars home after work, to check if everything was working. And after all, the incident was not that bad, and they repaired everything, so they did not understand why he made such a fuss out ouf it.
