Does Anyone Else Think UPS Trucks Sound Cool?

I heard one of many UPS trucks drive by my house in the pass week. When all is quiet and the driver steps on the gas, the engine has an attractive note, sounding like a 70's muscle car. Engine sounds are hard to describe- this one had a low groan type pitch. For a truck its size, very impressive note! Does anyone agree?

It is practically a trademark, when you hear one of those things rumbling down your street, and then hear their squeaky brakes bring it to a halt, you know it is the UPS man.

...Only when it approaches my house bringing an anticipated package  - A muscle car sound?...I don't know about that! It sounds like a ubiquitous 6 banger industrial beast of burden. A, perhaps, ironic note: The Dodge Viper has an exhaust note that has been noted as being akin to "a UPS truck"...and this was not being applied as a complimentary term. Due to the odd firing/exhaust pulse of a V10, it produces more of a monotone "bellow" than the deep V8 like throaty snarl you think it should have. Not a "bad" sound...just weird. Can't argue with the performance though!

A familiar sound, a familiar look. But a Hemi 'Cuda, GTO or 300ZX it's not. Just the familiar sound of a Ford 6 cyl, like Granny's Fairmont

I believe UPS trucks come in several sounds. During Christmas rush UPS uses their standard trucks plus rented Ryder trucks. But other than that their basic trucks are usually powered by Ford inline six cylinder overhead valve gasoline engines. Those are the ones that come to your house. But the larger ones that you may also see in the city have been, and probably still are, powered by Onan diesel engines.

But that familiar sound when the driver lets go of the clutch pedal and pushes down a little on the gas pedal is, I think, kind of mechanically romantic. To me it is special and comforting. Although I do not hear anything throaty or muscley in it.

The big UPS ones come to my house, the ones that are about the size of a bread truck.

Also this is also another good sounding one it's a real squeaky brakes and a real loud diesel that they luv to hit the gas with, the Swanson Man, anyone got these guys parading threw yer neighborhood? It really is something that makes me run to the door becuase I mistake it for the UPS! LOL

I get the Swanson trucks fairly often-- but I've never heard the engine! Greeneyes- Thanx for the infor about the engines. Now that I think about it, the note is lower than a muscle car, but it sounds very similiar! I think I might record the next one I hear too

Also, notice that the primary UPS truck design is only used by UPS. Does anybody know the story behind that?

They also had the best slogans as well, unitl it was dropped. "We run the tightest ship in the shipping business"
