I Guess It's Not Cool To Be A GoJet Pilot

I was reading over at an airline pilot forum that most US airline pilots do not allow GoJet (a United Express carrier) pilots to jumpseat on their aircraft and some GoJet pilots even turn around their IDs while in the airport so no one knows who they work for. They're also referred to as scabs in the industry. Can someone enlighten on this? Not sure if this is right part of the forum to post this in.

GoJet was a way for Trans States to subvert the TSA pilots seniority list, and pay pilots less money. The hard work of the TSA pilots generated the profits that bought those CRJ-700s. But instead of getting the benefits of those aircraft (quicker upgrade), TSA pilots got shafted by greedy pilots who were willing to take substandard wages and screw over TSA's pilots in exchange for quickly getting PIC time.

A similar event took place at Mesa when they first created Freedom. Freedom was a separate seniority list, and was thought of in a very similar light to GoJet. These are known as the Freedom "A" pilots. Mesa today has such a crappy contract because their pilots had to take concessions in order to get management to put the Freedom operation back on the Mesa seniority list.

The definition of a scab has usually been one who crosses a picket line. Neither Freedom or GoJet pilots did this, but they did show a willingness to further their careers by stepping on the backs of others. So while technically not scabs, Freedom "A" and GoJet pilots are not thought of fondly by many regional pilots.



It is a mistake to think you can solve any major problems with just potatoes.

I find it odd that they would take pay cuts in an already low paying job to get PIC time...but I guess this meant less time to get to the majors?

Correct, and for those who were direct entry Captains it wasn't a pay cut. The wages at GoJet were simply substandard to those at other regionals flying 70 seat jets. These wages have now changed as GoJet has been organized by the Teamsters and signed a contract.

Juding by comments made to me by the small number of pilots I know, there is also growing resentment towards the pilots who accept positions at airlines flying similar equipment for sub-standard wages. Airlines like JetBlue, Allegiant, Virgin America, and Skybus have made it difficult for them to regain ground lost after 9/11.

Right. They will never ever regain ground. Times have changed. Yes, 9/11 is a part of it. The glitter and glam of being a highly paid commerical pilot, may it be regional or mainline, is over. Times have changed.

I don't think it's a matter of wanting to be "highly-paid" but more so a matter of wanting to see wages go up not down.

Trying to negotiate back part of your 40% paycut while airlines like Allegiant are paying near RJ wages on a 140 seat aircraft makes it tough. But it is not as bad as management setting up a separate certificate to take flying from a 6 year RJ captain making only $50 some odd grand a year with crappy work rules and giving it to some guy who is willing do it for much less because he can get some TPIC. That's what happened at TSA and Mesa.
