Why Do Snails Die When You Put Salt On Their Body?

If you put some salt on a snail body it will move a little bit and then it dies. Why does this thing happen?

Or remembered what we were told in Invertebrate Zoology. Salt works nicely on leeches too, thank goodness since I don't smoke and tend not to have suitable amounts of alcohol available.

So you could ruin your snail's day with a tot of whisky!
