Lloyd Carr Shuns Hawaii, Schedules App St. Instead

In a decision that came back to bite him in the ass, It is now being revealed that the University of Michigan had originally offered the University of Hawaii football team $600,000.00 to open the season in Ann Arbor on September 1st, but UM head coach Lloyd Carr shot down the idea as he apparently wanted the sure victory over the Mountaineers. The Mountaineers, btw, were only given $400,000 for their game with Michigan this past weekend.
Ironically, the hole in Hawaii's schedule was created when that other Michigan team (MSU) chickened out of their scheduled game with Hawaii this season and paid Hawaii $250,000.00 to cancel the scheduled contest at Aloha Stadium.
And one more twist to this story. After Lloyd Carr objected to opening the season with Hawaii, UH Athletic Director then approached Appalachian State about opening the season here, but they had opened their season here 4 years ago and lost 40-17 and said it was "one of the toughest games they have ever played in their schools history", and they too declined.
Interesting article from today's Honolulu newspaper:

This is what happens when a non-BCS school starts to win on a regular basis, no one wants to play them and its not just Hawaii, but a couple of other WAC teams also.

Nah, I'd just rather make fun of you for making topics where only other 1 person so far seems to give a damn. :-*

I'll jump in and say that I think its interesting. Michigan obviously wanted an easier opening game....and they got a game no one would ever forget.

The strong WAC teams (as well as BYU a few years back) exemplify one of the major flaws in the BCS system, in that it doesn't give these teams an equal chance at the big bowl games. It also makes it hard for these teams (UH, Boise State, etc) to schedule decent games because the BCS teams don't want to risk losing to a UH, Boise State or even worse, App. State.

Hawai'i's situation is compounded by the "distance" factor (UH is currently embarking on the longest conference commute to Louisiana Tech at over 4,000 miles). Either way, ESPN was offering upwards of $750,000 to fill the holes in our 2007 schedule and no one bit...Michigan is probably wishing it had.

The saga of Hawai'i and the WAC is interesting as were left out of the Mountain West breakaway due to our location. Sometimes, though, being the big fish in a small pond has some benefits.

S12PPL has some sort of Hawai'i/Colt Brennan envy.

I look back at some of my posts from a few years ago and think, "Boy I was immature." (ask Pualani  Wink ) I think that college made me more thoughtful, and respectful of others' opinions. I try really hard now to just write well thought out posts arguing a point-of-view without insulting people or their opinions.

Some people take things too personally, and fall back to insults and arguing over well meaning and thoughtful discussion.

As for the topic...we usually don't get to know the details of how NCAA football schedules are created. I can say that I learned alot from the scheduling problems UH has encountered in the past few years. The behind the scenes offers of money and TV time is fascinating to me, especially how involved ESPN can get in trying to schedule games with good "plotlines."

The same thing happens when I look back at my posts. I've just recently done that since my 6th a.net anniversary is this month. The difference is extraordinary and that is just the difference in maturity from High School to University.

Anyways, back to the topic of this thread:
I've got to thank Lloyd Carr because this blunder gave us the (arguably) best upset in college football of all-time. Also, since I attend a school with a chance of playing App. State in the playoffs (Sam Houston State University - Southland Conference), this gives me hope especially after how bad we got beat by Texas last year.

Because the thread itself is imature. Everyone on the plannet knows that Michigan took the App. St. game because on paper it would be easier. No crap. Do they look back on it and wish "Gosh shucks! We sure wish we had played Hawaii instaed!" Nope. Not for one second. They could have lost to UH just as easily as they'd lost to App. St. That argument is pointless and lame.

And as for Aloha whining and crying about how no one would take a game with UH this ear: It was on short notice! I'll tell you right now why Oregon State turned down the game with Hawaii. It would have given them no bye during the conference schedule. In the Pac 10, you play every other Pac 10 school, now. That bye week is important. OSU has a brutal start to the Pac 10 schedule this year:

@ ASU
vs. UCLA
vs. Arizona
@ Cal

After their game @ Cal, they would have had to hop on a plane to go play at UH the following week. Sorry, but that isn't fun smack dab in the middle of the conference schedule when you have to play USC Nov. 3rd. We would have had a home game against Stanford following the UH game.

When did I whine and cry?

The reason we were trying to schedule games at such a late date is because Michigan State paid $250,000 to pull out of a game which had been scheduled for YEARS.

Well, the search for a tune up game just got more interesting. That 12th game all those colleges wanted is not looking like such a great idea now that it's getting harder to tell who you can beat up on. Boise State, Appalachian State, Fresno State. San Jose State and other States (as well as other types of Colleges and Universities) have all had great seasons over the last few years and seem to be capable of knocking off the traditional big names on occasion....

remember...any given Saturday (or Thursday or whatever other day they're playing)....
