We just started selling the (basic) I-Phone for $299 today--- get 'em while they're hot!  Smile

It's a limited time offer and not an official price

They're dumping the 4 GB iPhone variety, so you can get one for $299. It's only while supplies last though, so I wouldn't call it a "price drop."

The real official price drop was for the 8 GB iPhone, which is now $399. That model will be available for anyone to buy until Apple decides to change something else.

If you bought it less than 30 days ago and didn't have it engraved, you may be able to return it (minus a restocking fee) and buy a new iPod classic. Be sure to mention your intentions to the customer service person; they're generally a little more lenient with stuff like that if they know your money is going back into Apple merchandise.

Otherwise, this announcement has been pretty big news for a while and Apple made it pretty clear what it was going to be about. Also, the fall season usually brings an iPod update. Ever wonder why they give those "free iPod" rebates to students when they buy a Mac for the new school year? It's not because they're nice, it's because they want to dump old inventory.

How much does it suck that these days, everything is obsolescent before you've left the checkout? With Apple products, it's only exacerbated because of their cachet value ("Oh, you have only an iPod Video? I have an iPod Classic!"). For myself, a lot of times it's as though I can't buy something--anything!--without it going on sale or dropping in price the very next day. Add it up, that's a lot of $$ I could've saved by being a little lazier or more patient or whatever.  Sad

Yeah ok... Its due to Apple dumped the POS 4GB... Big deal. Also "we" is only AT&T/Cingular and or Apple stores if he works at either one. There is no other retail store/chain but Bestbuy's that have Apple stores inside then that sells the I-phone yet.

 checkmark

The drop was the 8GB to 399.99 due to the V.2 of the I-phone is rumored to release early next year at the original price when then introduce it in Asia.

I didn't buy it from Apple. I went to the Evil Empire since they were $20 (more or less) less than everyone else locally.

In my observation, Apple doesn't lower the price of a product that often. Instead they add more capability for the same price.

Says who? So far most people have apparently confirmed that the iPhone battery capacity is generally up to specs, which are pretty good, actually:

Apple iPhone Cell Phone Review - Battery Life - WirelessInfo.com

Quote:
After extensive testing with several iPhones, we tested the iPhone as having a talk time battery life of 7 hours and 4 minutes. That's a good time, and is just a little shorter than Apple's claimed battery life of up to 8 hours. It beats quite a few of our comparison phones by several hours; the Ocean, the N95 and the Treo 750 all had significantly shorter talk time results. The LG Prada had a little longer talk time, though, and the BlackBerry 8800 had more than three hours over the iPhone, so if you make a lot of calls or travel away from power sources, the 8800 may be a better pick.
And as for battery durability, there is no reason to expect it will be below what li-ion batteries will achieve anywhere else.

Quoting palladium (Reply 15):
and the screen light...is not bright enough for you to see during a clear sunny day on the outside.
Apple iPhone Cell Phone Review - Screen etc. - WirelessInfo.com

Quote:
The iPhone's screen measured 168 in our test, an extremely impressive score. As you can see from the chart below the iPhone blows away the competition, with a score 87% above the BlackBerry 8800, it's nearest competition. Luckily the iPhone also has a sensor that automatically adjusts the brightness for you depending on ambient lighting conditions, so your eyes won't be burned out of your sockets most of the time. Of course when sunlight is hitting those 168 lux come in very useful, as you'll see below.
There is a lot of mythology around, most of it wide off the mark.

The facts are speaking against your claims. Nothing against personal preferences, but have you actually used an iPhone already in order to make an informed decision?

Seems like the public has come to their senses and has stopped to buy an incredibly overpriced phone. I wonder what the European prices will be like, and if they indeed try to pull off a 500€ pricetag for a netlocked phone bundled to a contract. And who would be stuopid enough to actually buy it. And, of course, if they are willing to actually update its features to make them sound a little bit less 2004.

By the way, another unique iPhone feature:

You can now have mp3-ringtones! Some 5 years after this became standard for all mobile phones, you can use them now, of course not directly, you can only purchase them on iTunes for just 2$ a piece. The funny thing is, the apple fanboy crowd will probably find a reason why this is great and an absolute advantage over other mobile phones. After all, you have to justify why you spent all in all 2000$ on a mobile phone that was almost up to date. In 2004.

If it were only the mp3 ringtones...

Here's a little best of features which apple somehow forgot while thinking of what they would make with the money they earn by selling the iPhone:

- You can't just use a mp3 as a ringtone. You have to buy it from apple.

- Are you waiting somewhere, being bored? Other phone companies include little games to kill the time. On the iPhone, you can at least clean the glossy display so your friends won't make fun of you again when they see you collection of fingerprints.

- No flash player. Of course, apple always knows what is best for their customers and has therefore decided that no page including but youtube is worth being watched on an iPhone. Ignoring the fact that youtube is available on other phones, like the Nokia N95 as a dedicated service as well, apple fan boys don't say "Our phone has no flash!", they say "Our phone has youtube on it! How cool is that?"

- Speaking of flashes, the camera of the iPhone doesn't have one, not even a tiny LED that you could use for portraits at night.

- But why should it? The camera of the iPhone has only 2MP anyway, or a mere 40% of what is today considered standard among high-end phones.

- Instant Messaging? ICQ? MSN? On almost all mobile phones today? Yes. On the iPhone? No.

- MMS? Who need's Multimedia messages, when you can write a sms. 160 letters can express so much more than a picture or a video.

- On the other hand, typing SMS is not that easy on the iPhone. While typing on the 600$ machine is in horizontal mode, apple has decided that it would be way more fun for their customers if they have to type SMS on the tiny keyboard in vertical mode.

- Coming back to the camera, it can't record videos either. You'll have to wait for the iPhone Video costing 1200$.

- Voice recognition? Who needs that? Who actually wants to call someone while driving in the car? And if they want to, they can still break the law - after all, they are apple customers!

- Now that we have figured out that bluetooth headsets are pointless with the iPhone as you have to hold in your hands to call someone anyway, it won't surprise you that the iPhone doesn't support the A2DP Stereo Bluetooth protocol. Cables are great, who wants wireless headphones?

- Headphones. Apple headphones. They are the way to go. Mainly because standard 3,5mm headphones don't fit in the iPhone jack.

- UMTS, HSDPA. Two great ways of using the internet while you out of your home. Great, that is, great if you don't own an iPhone. Somehow apple forgot this feature. But consider this: The longer the download of a page takes, the more time you have to put finger prints on the iPhone - more to clean if you need to kill time!

- The iPhone comes with a great map tool. Or, to stick with the truth, it would be great, if you had a mobile phone with integrated GPS like the Nokia N95.

- If your battery in the iPhone starts to die, you get to do what you seem to like to do: Pay apple. 90$ that is. For a battery. FOr comparison: The battery of a Nokia N95 costs only 20-30$ - and you can change it yourself. You could buy a spare battery and carry it with you incase you don't have access to a power line for several days. How lame is that?

- Earlier I mentioned UMTS. Another perk of UMTS is that you can video-phone with someone, maybe because you are away from home for a longer time and still want to see your loved ones. Well, be glad that the iPhone does not have UMTS. Otherwise you would be pissed off that your iPhone lacks a front-camera.

- By the way, as reward for the 600$ you just paid apple you can only use your iPhone with AT&T. That's called a netlock.

- And now imagine at your friend, and he has that great new song and you want to copy on your phone. Just ask your friend to download iTunes and register. Who wants phones that you can just connect to USB and access it with any computer?

If you look at the history of the iPod, the line has been updated or extended or changed somehow every fall since 2001. It's nothing new. There are two times in the year not to buy an Apple product: August and March. Why? Because in April and September, they do something new.
