Hello,

I recently downloaded I-tunes 7 and I am still trying to get used to it (not an avid user by any means). Its the first time I have used it so bear with me.

It seems this version lets you create (and view) a list of the album covers corresponding to the music/albums you have on your local list. I must tell you though that I have no intention on buying music from i-tunes, the only reason I used it is to be able to input my music library/cd's into the my ipod (a birthday gift from my wife).

So when I try to "get the album art work" itunes warns me that in order to get it that I need to create an account with Itunes (which I do not care for). However I actually do have some images (electronic versions of the covers) of the albums I have......so the question is: is there a way to import these images or save them in a particular folder where I tunes will use it to display on the album cover view???

I figured many here on A net would have a good answer for this...

thanks for your advice in advance.....

PS...if what I want to do is not possible then ......that is lame .......I hate it when they try to make you get an account or buy stuff .....

thanks!!!

Under MacOS you can simply cut & paste the artwork through the clipboard. Preferably select all titles of an album, invoke "Get Info" and paste the image into the artwork field. That stores it into all tracks of this album.

Very practical as well is the application Clutter by Sprote Rsrch. which makes it even easier to get the cover art for existing files.

You could try dragging the image to the album artwork viewer. Works for me on my mac.

I've used iTunes under Windows back when I used to use a PC, and you can just copy/paste artwork.

To make life easier, instead of using Get Info everytime just go to View and click on Show Artwork. All you have to do once this is done is copy the image you want and paste it into the white box in the bottom left corner of iTunes.

Quoting QR332 (Reply 3):
go to View and click on Show Artwork

I am using itunes 7.... so when I try this and try to paste, it won't let me paste...It is very likely I am doing something very dumb..but could it be some sort of setting..

Paying for album artwork is just silly. Even if they charge a penny, I can't believe people actually pay for it. Here's one way of getting it for free: images.google.com

When you find the image you want, you should be able to directly drag it from your browser window into iTunes (bottom left corner of the iTunes window). If that doesn't work, save the image to your computer. Then you can go to the song properties and set the album artwork to the picture you just saved.

The album artwork from iTunes doesn't cost anything.

So when I try to "get the album art work" itunes warns me that in order to get it that I need to create an account with Itunes (which I do not care for).

Just create the account and don't use it. I don't remember if they want you to add in a credit card but even if they do turn off 1-click buying so someone doesn't get sneaky on you and purchase something while your back is turned. It will also keep you from the urge to buy something you don't want.

Seriously, they don't charge for album artwork. Once you creat an account you can find the menu option for get album artwork and iTunes will go out and match the album name you have and if they carry the album it will update the file with the artwork.

Pretty simple...free...and worth saving time on adding it all in manually.

One caveat...if the iTunes store doesn't have the album (see the entire Beatles collection) they won't have the artwork. You also have to have the album name exactly the same as what it is in the iTunes store. A few warnings but still worth the help.

I've had trouble with that from time to time as well under Windows. Try playing those songs and see if the artwork shows up in the display.

For a while the artwork didn't show up when I copied it in. Then it did. And now it looks like the newest version (7.4.1) doesn't show me the artwork again until I play the song or file.

See above. It appears to be a bug of some sort within the Windows version of iTunes.

Another thing to try is select all the songs for an album (CTRL-Click them) and then get the properties. A different properties screen will appear that will show a small window where you can paste the artwork and apply it to all the selected songs.

Get your facts straight and don't spread misinformation. You don't pay for album artwork from iTunes.

When you say "that" it reads like you believe I know what folder to put the music in.....However sadly I don't, so I guess I need to start by finding out where is that folder......I guess I was trying to say that I do NOT know where to put the images so that Itunes can link them to the songs...do you know where they should go.??

I really don't mind doing it manually....I can do it every so often during weekends one album at a time...its just that I don't know how to do it...

The whole dragging and dropping does NOT work in vista.. (or at least in vista + itunes7) ...I have tried it multiple times....there must be a different way...

I do have to try out the going to the songs properties... do I just right click the song in the library list to go to the song properties or do I have to invoke a menu up top (while the song is highlighted)...sorry ..I feel completely stupid for asking this...but I just don't have the patience with Itunes I think...

thanks DeltaGator.....

cheers

I've never tried Drag and Drop so you might be on to something there. What I do is get the properties for the file. Right click on the song in the Library to get the properties sheet for that file. Go to the artwork tab and paste in the artwork. You may be able to drag it in here but I don't know since I've not tried it. I find the artwork I want to put in there (usually can find album covers on Amazon) and copy it from that webpage and then right click and paste it into the field. You may or may not see it there but after you press OK you should then be able to play the music file and see the artwork in the display at the bottom left of the iTunes window.

Sign up for an account and save yourself a fair amount of time copying files into the properties sheet of a file or files. I have something like 16,000 files on my iPod and using iTunes to get the artwork saved a lot of time. I still had to go manually edit many of them but it was far less than doing it all manually.

Just use TuneSleeve; it takes most if not all of the work (searching for artwork, copying and pasting etc.) out of adding artwork:

Gotcha. I've never had to use that feature on iTunes because I always elected to find it myself. When the original poster said

it lead me to believe that they actually charged for these images so I tried to save him a couple of bucks since he is obviously not a computer expert.

Looks like I pissed off the iTunes police. The trouble is that I never said they charged for it, did I? I only wondered why anyone would actually pay for such things if indeed they did charge a fee.

So get your accusations straight and don't go around being a jagoff.

Your quote was as follows..."Paying for album artwork is just silly. Even if they charge a penny, I can't believe people actually pay for it. Here's one way of getting it for free: images.google.com"

You are assuming that they charge for it based on misinterpretation of the question on your part because you didn't read for comprehension in the original question or the first responses. No iTunes Police present in my house. Perhaps in Klaus' place but not mine.

Get your facts straight and you won't be accused of spreading misinformation on something you apparently didn't understand from the get-go.

Lighten up Francis. You're taking it too personally. I meant no disrespect though I can see how it might have come across that way.

So coming back to the topic at hand:

Is it possible to drag and drop using Itunes 7 + vista or not...

I certainly can't do it in my set up ...could anyone confirm this...or am I the only one with Itunes 7 and vista Here (not trying to throw a hisy fit just wondering)??? or am I not using itunes correctly(maybe some stupid setting)???

In summary, is the only way to get artwork : to sign up in Itunes (I understand that I do not need to necessarily buy music to get the artwork)

cheers

I can't say, really... under MacOS it works both with drag&drop and through the clipboard; There are also additional utilities which help you grab covers from Amazon or other sources (also for free as from the iTunes Store).

If you follow my instructions in Reply 9 about copying and pasting pictures you'll be good to go. Copy the pictures from Amazon, your PC, or anywhere and paste them into the properties for the file or multiple files. It's really quite easy and apparently can be made even easier if using additional tools that have been mentioned by others.

For what it's worth I am not allowed to drag and drop artwork onto either the Now Playing section of iTunes or the actual song name itself in the library window above. I tried it with both music and podcasts and no luck. I get the circle with the slash through it denying me. I would think this would be a limitation of iTunes and not XP (which I am using) or Vista which you are using.

That said, go back and look at reply 9 from me to get things done. Sign up for an account and then go to the menus at the top and select Advanced and then select Get Album Artwork from that menu. For stuff that is not in the iTunes shop or you have the album name wrong you can do the cut and paste like I detailed out. You can also use the various tools that have been suggested though I'm guessing having the right album name will help with those as well.

Good luck. It took me a couple of hours one night but I got my catalog all fixed up with the right artwork and I have about 11,000 songs to deal with.
