Out of my three decades of living, I must agree with you that the '70s were da bomb! (as we say in the Bronx.) (closely followed by the '90s. -The 80s sucked.) Where did you get that Northwest ad? And what airline were those "stewardesses" working for in that black/white photo?!
Donder's Janet Jackson comment was friggin' hilarious. I thought everybody knew that that was Thelma from "Good Times." Janet (not pictured) was, like, only 9 or 10 when she was on that show.

I wish I remembered more of the '70s. I have some vague memories of 1978-79, when I was in Grades 1 and 2. That's about it. But it seems like it was a lively and colourful decade, if a bit tacky at times (e.g., plaid suits).
The '70s certainly looked more fun than the gritty, dreary, mean-spirited Gray '90s.
Let's see if this will become a great decade, or just more of the same. It seems to be the year ending with '2' ('62, '72, '82, '92, etc.) in which you start to see a clear contrast with the previous decade, the first two years being more of a transitional period.

to put it in perspective, this also happened in the 1970s:
- rise of international terrorism, ETA, RAF, PLO, Red Brigades, etc.
- Islamic revolution in Iran means the end of human rights there
- Vietnam war turns into a bloody disaster
- Jimmy Carter
- my grandfathers die (yes both of them)
- cocaine and heroin addiction become serious problems in the western world
- John Lennon is murdered

Sorry to disagree Superfly, but IMHO I'd say the '60s was the greatest decade and 1968 the greatest year...seemed like everything happened in '68.

I don't know 'bout Superfly, but I'm a tad too young to remember the 60s. Wish I did though.
As far as 1968, I think the best things were Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Starship, and of course, the movie "Barberella" (starring Jane Fonda).

Add to that, Braniff in full bloom, interior design we can laugh at now, ditto fashion and hairstyles!
The social reforms of the 1960's that brought the UK into the 20th century really kicked in during the 1970's.
Music was variable, but still lots of innovation, plus the back to basics 'year-zero' of Punk, at least over here.
The early mid 70's were for me, American cinemas last golden age.
UK cinema went down the toilet.
Other bummers: oil crisis, recession, the emergence of Thatcher in the UK, (though the stupider trade-unions made that inevitable), Northern Ireland erupted.
I was only 13 at the end of the decade, but always enjoy reminders of the 1970's.

1968 was a terrible year!
Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King was assasinated and Richard Nixon was elected.
Lincoln no longer offered to Convertible Continental that year.
Although, Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 did 'Fool On The Hill'.

That's why it was a great year historically. Also, don't forget:
Tet Offensive and seige of Khe Sanh, and the My Lai massacre in Vietnam
U.S.S. Pueblo incident off North Korea.
Prague Spring uprising and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
1968 Olympics in Mexico City and the protest of black athletes (John Carlos and Tommie Smith). Also, the student riots and massacre preceding the games.
Democratic Convention in Chicago.
"The whole world is watching..." What Chicago song?

Superfly, Great posting! I agree agree agree, the 70's ROCKED! I'm only 37, but I always tell teens that they will never have as much fun as we did back in the 70's.
True. Great Innovative Films, the BEST Music recorded
(although the 60's are a close close second), The world and the future were FULL of promise for kids my age,
We had The Brady Bunch (oooooh, Marcia!), Charlies
Angels, the beginning of Disco, M.A.S.H., The great Disaster films of the 70's (The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, etc). In my neighborhood, growing up in the 70's, we didn't know what cocaine and hard drugs were, our schools didn't have security or metal detectors. No Internet, no cell-phones, but who needed them anyway? Aaaaaah, and let's not forget the 70's were the decade that introduced the B-747, the L-1011, and the DC-10 to the world. GREAT
Northwest Pic Ad, Superfly!

Superfly, whether Carter was good or not is debateable. Some people say he was, many more say he was a disaster.
It will be that way forever with all politicians...
In my opinion he was a disaster.
Lennon, oops. Let's say the '80s didn't start until 1981. It's the eternal debate over whether a decade runs from xxx0 to xxx9 or yyy1 to yyy0

When I look back at '70s pop culture, I get the impression that it was a decade when it was okay to have some fun, even to get away from reality for a bit.
That's something that's been missing in recent years. Instead of turning on the TV to unwind by watching something totally divorced from reality, like Benny Hill or Charlie's Angels, people turn it on to have reality rubbed in their faces with the latest 'Survivor' imitation, or yet another documentary on life behind prison walls.
