As it says in the link, some form of radiation would not surprise me as being the cause. That's if it is a meteorite... and not something out of 'War of the Worlds'
A very hot rock landing on ground containing chemically active substances (sulphur, iron, water, etc, for example) could cause all manner of strange chemicals to be created. There could also be reactions with the atmospheric gases to create, eg, NOx, cyanides, sulphides, none of which are especially conducive to good health.
