Fantastic research for this weeks Nascar thread.
I like the articles.
I got money on either Jr or Hamlin to win this weeks dance.

It should be a good race. I am interested to see what the COT will do at a superspeedway.
Also, Greg Biffle won the race last week @ Kansas.

LMAO! Its been forever since he won. I actually think The Biff is one of the best drivers in Nascar Today. For the past 2 years he has had junk equipment from the almighty Roush Empire.

I hoping for Jacques Villeneuve to make the race. Listening to his "NASCAR 101" lesson at the Vegas Truck race, if he makes the show it will be very interesting to see how he performs. He might set the record for being the most laps down with an undamaged racecar
Big, slow, heavy COT at Dega....could be a snoozer on Sunday.

I'm sure the same can be said for Dale Jr. over at DEI and their engine dept.

Wow... Junior just predicted a victory for himself tomorrow on Speed's qualifying broadcast...
"I don't really condone betting, but I'm gonna win Sunday. I feel pretty good about it.. I don't think anybody know as much about it as I do, but I feel like this car's good enough. So we got the confidence part, we just have to get out there and physically get it done."

Utterly farcical qualifying session.
NASCAR made this an impound race, so all of the go-or-go-homers had qualifying setups on the car simply to get in, while all the guaranteed-entry drivers had regular race setups. (the cars are impounded after qualifying... you can't make setup changes)
The top 11 - and 13 of the top 15 - qualifiers on speed were go or go homers, but only 8 of those make the race. So AJ Allmendinger, Boris Said, and Scott Riggs, who were 9-10-11 on the speed charts, go home.
The old qualifying system was SOOOOOO much better....

What does everybody think of the seemingly imminent exodus of drivers from open wheel into NASCAR? Montoya & Allmendinger are here, Villeneuve & Franchitti are coming, Hornish is toying with the idea, Dixon and Wheldon have talked about it. And what has Scott Speed done (besides his unsuccessful F1 ride) to prompt interest from owners in a Cup ride?
The only thing I don't like is that it's going to bump guys out of rides who have spent their entire careers in stock cars, such as Jeff Green, Johnny Sauter, David Stremme, etc. Another thing that the media has seemed to forget is that two other open wheelers have entered NASCAR & bailed out soon after, namely Christian Fittipaldi & Paul Tracy.

Sam Hornish was 13th, Sterling Marlin 17th. Both those guys missed & had top 20 qualifying efforts. It's the Pepsi 400 all over again, only a monsoon didn't show up late in qualifying this time.
This is why the top 35 rule sucks, and needs to go as quickly as possible. I wish they'd bring back the old system. Take the top 38 in qualifying based on SPEED, then give out 5 provisionals based on points. Unfortunately, Brian France & the heads at NASCAR don't realize that there are, once again, more than 35 fully funded teams that show up each week. That rule was designed when there were start & park guys showing up every week to fill the field & a couple of them upstaged Scott Riggs & Scott Wimmer at Charlotte, both teams missing the field with big dollar sponsorships (Valvoline & CAT, respectively).

Al of them were go-or-go-homers, and all had qualifying setups on the car simply to get in the race. With the impound, all the contenders had regular race setups on the car.
The go-or-go-homers will fall like stones once the race starts.
That said, the Toyotas are not short on top-end horsepower by any means... they put a bunch of cars on a dyno after Atlanta, and the highest power was... 799hp by Dale Jarrett's Toyota

Don't forget about Patrick Carpentier that will likely drive the GEM #10 Car next season.
I think the open wheel invasion into NASCAR is a good thing for the sport. It just proves there is no bigger series than NASCAR right now.
I wish these guys would do one year of Busch first..to get accustomed to the Cup cars. With the COT rolling out full time in 2008 and having basically nothing in common with the Busch car, it is understandable the open wheel drivers skip Busch and go straight to Cup. Maybe they can run a few CTS races? Since the Truck Series' trucks drive more like the COT from what I hear...
Go Jacques tomorrow! I hope he causes the big one and takes out Jeff Gordon

Your statement clearly shows you have no clue about the sport and you route for drivers that clearly make their debut at tracks they should not and have no talent driving at.
You make it even more clear that you do not know shit.... Your Boyfriend "Villeneuve" starts 6th,,, Gordan 34th. I think that someone that has 4 Championship Cups and won the spring race has abit more smarts and driver ability than someone that has only sat in a cup car as of Thursday. I mean come on your driver is JPM/Busch Bros... clear losers!

Yup.
. . . . . .
Alas I will be 'watching' this race from my office on the computer . . . damnit.
But I'm sure the phone will be ringing, Jackie is going to be planted in front of the big screen cursing Stewart and all things Toyota and rooting for that boy Gordon . . .

At the American Le Mans Series' Petit Le Mans race @ Road Atlanta yesterday, this was a popular topic around the paddock.
Quote: The recent migration of several big-name open-wheel drivers to NASCAR was a topic of discussion in the paddock at Road Atlanta on Saturday before the start of the 10th annual Petit Le Mans.
Bobby Rahal, a team owner and former driver, said he believes one of the main reasons drivers such as Dario Franchitti, Scott Speed and Jacques Villeneuve were at Talladega this weekend is financial.
"NASCAR is where the money is right now," Rahal said, adding that many open-wheel veterans also see NASCAR as a more stable circuit with heavier but much safer cars.
Look at the kind of money NASCAR generates, ChampCar and the IRL would love to be making that kind of money. The split between (at the time) CART and the IRL squashed those chances. NASCAR exploded in popularity right about the time the split in open-wheel racing occurred. NASCAR is so popular that racetracks are being proposed in many parts of the country sole to attract a NASCAR race. This could be a bad thing for NASCAR, as some of the older and smaller tracks may end up losing race dates or be bumped from the schedule altogether (Rockingham, North Wilkesboro). ISC could potentially drop dates @ RIR and/or Martinsville down the road if they do build their proposed track in Colorado. SMI has long wanted a second date @ LVMS, so who knows, they could buy out one of the few non-ISC or SMI tracks left in NASCAR (Pocono, Dover, New Hampshire) and drop a date (or in the case of NHIS, the only date) so they can have a second Las Vegas race.
