According to Lion air's history on the following page, they celebrated their 3rd anniversary in 2004 by holding a Mass circumcision of 1500 children
http://www.lionair.co.id/profile_history.htm scroll down to achievments

Lion Air celebrated the third anniversary by holding

a mass circumcision for more than 1500 kids lived around Jakarta

area at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah.

I wonder if this is a usual way to celebrate an important event in Indonesia .....

Well they have do something new to stand out then? At least they didn't slaughter any animals.... just wait until they have serious engine maintenance issues (as Nepal Airlines had).

Ah well. When in Rome...

Or 10% less LOL

Unless there is a problem with it, why chop it off. Awful awful thing for any child to have to go through.

I would imagine. However, it was found out recently that it gives a 50% in HIV infection risk, so there is a benefit to it at least.

It is a fundamental religious requirement mostly related to hygiene, I think its the same for Jews and as pointed out it helps in reducing the risk of some diseases.

In Indonesia, when large companies celebrate their anniversaries, as their contributions to the society, they usually do charitable things like donating books or clothes to orphanages, giving free health checks to people in need, or doing free circumcision to poor and orphan boys.

Indonesia is a muslim country. In fact, it is the largest muslim country in the world. And it is obligatory (some says it's highly recommended) for adult muslim men to be circumcised. Moreover, in Indonesia, a lot of non-muslim men are also circumcised too.

I do NOT see anything political, it is a civil aviation thing --- and it is NOT a "mutilation" but the circumcision, and whether this is done at age 9 or 10 or 11 does not really matter.

it IS awful. Not the surgery under narcosis in hospital but the weeks of painful healing.

its a religious requirement indeed, but that does not implicitly mean it objectively makes sense.

well of course it is a non aviation related topic, since the celebration and the way has nothing to do with the airline but with the dominant religion within the airlines country. it is a matter of judgement, to some people cutting off a clitoris is a religious thing, to others it is cutting of a part of a penis, to some people it is a mutilation of kids, abuse of a kid in the name of a religion.
