NASCAR: Homestead 36/36 & Season Review

Didn't see this up here, so I decided to go ahead and post it.

So, we get one more Nextel Cup race before our winter racing withdrawls start.

Storylines:
-Johnson's on the pole, Gordon starts 11th. JJ, sadly, is looking for his 5th straight win, which hasn't been done since 1971 when The King did it.
-Johnson holds an 86 point lead coming in & as long as he can have a decent run, he should be OK. That said, luck hasn't been on the side of points leaders coming into the weekend though. Mike Skinner had a 29 point lead in the Trucks & had trouble, giving the crown to Ron Hornaday. Could the same happen today?
-Last Cup race for the old car. It's all COT starting in February.
-Last ride for some drivers in their current rides, including Shrub in the 5 and Dale Jr in the 8.
-Last race for Dale Jarrett as a full-time Cup driver, he'll run 6 races next season.
-Last race for JGR with GM, the only manufacturer they've had since they started in 1992.

Congrats to Jimmie Johnson - 2007 Cup Champ! Also very happy Kenseth was able to win his last race with Robbie Riser as crew chief. Pretty good race, lots of good racing. Is it time for Daytona yet?  Smile

I wouldn't be so pessimistic..there are plenty of things to look forward to next season.

1. No more going back and forth between the car of tomorrow, and the car of today.
2. We won't have to watch ESPN broadcast another cup race until next June or July.
3. DirecTV will have Speed HD and most NASCAR shows will be produced in HD which should make for some great TV.
4. Amid the declining TV ratings, Brian France has said no more changes to NASCAR or the point system, for now at least. Great news!

-Will Kyle Busch have more wins than wrecked racecars over at Gibbs?? Time will tell.
-Who will perform better, Dale Jr. or Kyle Busch?
-How will Tony Stewart and Joe Gibbs Racing do driving Toyota's next season?
-Will Toyota get their first cup win?
-How many races will Mikey not qualify for next year?
-How will NASCAR respond to declining TV ratings and sagging popularity? One only hopes it will be with lower ticket prices!
-Will 2008 spell the end for the #4 Morgan McClure Motorsports team?

Me personally, I'm looking forward to going to the road course at Sonoma next year. Should be a great race!

It will be a short off season, but in my opinion at least, there are plenty of things to be optimistic about next year. Bring it on!

I love NASCAR but the "Chase for the Nextel Cup" is a bunch of crap. I hate it!

I may be biased of the old system due to the fact that Jeff Gordon would have won this year and he is my favorite driver, but The Chase just flat out sucks a**.

First off, congrats to the #48 team - they won and, regardless of my personal feelings, I'll raise a glass to the champion.

As a fan of JGR, I'm not sure how I feel about this off-season. The addition of Kyle Busch alone would have given me reason to doubt the short term future of the team, now the transition to Toyota has only added more to the uncertainty.

I'll be surprised if JGR ends next season with Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, and Toyota all still on the team. One of the three will leave at some point during the season.  twocents

As far as the COT and the Chase, neither are going away any time soon, unfortunately. Oh well, as I mentioned in another thread recently, there's always hope of a "Seinfeld" marathon on TBS to provide a little more excitement on Sunday afternoons than has been coming from the racetrack in recent days.

It was his Cup to lose, and he played it smart . . .

Although I am loathe to have 'my' driver in a Rice Burner next year I'm quite sure that because of the caliber of the driver - Stewart vs Waltrip - Toyota could see a couple checkered flags . . .

Agreed . . . .the old system worked just fine . . .

I'm no Gordon fan (the other half certainly is) but would rather have seen him go the distance than get caught up in this Chase  redflag .

Either Kyle will go because he's a punk and Joe will finally wake up, or Stewart will leave because of Toyota. But I tend to agree, JGR will not be the same team at the end of next season that it is now.

Is Tony that loyal to Chevy? I figured he would do pretty much what Joe Gibbs asks.... I think Joe Gibbs has done more for Tony's career than Tony has up to this point, and I also think Tony knows that. I'm not talking about driving, certainly Tony has always had that ability, but more along the lines of dealing with the publicity/celebrity of being a top NASCAR driver.

I strongly disagree. Stewart has a contract that runs through 2009...and JGR is all Stewart has ever known in Cup....JGR's switch to Toyota is a long term move..it would be very difficult to go back to Chevy once you have an entire fleet of Toyota's and Toyota engines...and finally, Kyle Busch is signed long term through 2010.

JGR and more specifically, Kyle Busch, will get Toyota their first win in cup next season. That kid can make anything go fast..he drives on the edge every single lap...a driving style that will result in many a wrecked race cars..but also some success including at least one win next season.

One must finish the race to be successful . . . generally . . . one must also not alienate one's team-mates.

I think Kyle is behind the powercurve coming into the game next season . . .

I fully suspect Hamlin and Steewart to take young Kyle out "behind the woodshed" pre-season and make some very interesting points with him.

IMO - Kyle is dangerous. He might be able to make plenty of things go fast . . . but if he can't control it, then all the speed in the world is useless.

I don't see him leaving because of Toyota, but rather because of the atmosphere on the team. The combination of Stewart/Hamlin/Busch/Gibbs/Toyota is an awful volitaile mixture...

Quoting National757 (Reply 9):
JGR is all Stewart has ever known

And DEI was all that Dale, Jr. had ever known. Didn't stop him from leaving.

Quoting National757 (Reply 9):
Kyle Busch is signed long term through 2010.

Yet this does not guarantee he will still be driving for JGR through 2010. Contracts are renegotiated every day in the world of professional sports.

This last season sucked from the moment Jeff Gordon took the lead while slowing on pit road. I don't remember what race it was, but he was coming into the pits whilst the 20 was coming out onto the track to assume the lead. But those damn electronic scoring loops "clearly" showed Jeff Gordon assuming the lead, even though he was putzing along at 20MPH when the caution came out. Screw the scoring loops, being on pit lane when the caution comes out should put you at least a lap down.
Unless its NASCAR and their pet big money team is involved. Pardon me while adjust my foil hat.

Tony hadn't pitted yet, he assumed the lead when Gordon did pit... Tony pitted under the subsequent caution.

Well, if you beat the leader out of the pits, you don't lose a lap. It's been that way since 1948. Jeff Gordon beat (then-leader) Tony Stewart out of the pits by a good 3-4 seconds, and was never a lap down at any point.
