I'm on the market for one of these, solely b/c it'll play Blu Ray Discs and PS1 and 2 backward compatibility.
My brother's got one and he began telling me about harddrives, etc. So I ask him, what the heck do you need one of those for? He tells me so you can have photos on there. Then he says you might be able to save games?
Great. I've got a computer for that. So it doesnt really make too much sense to me. All my photos and editing is on my desktop. I guess I can see that some might want to show the family photos, but then you'd have to keep the pics on a memory card, no?
So for those of you out there that own a PS3, I just see it as a Blu Ray Disc, DVD and PS1, 2 and 3 game player. That's all I really see it as being. But perhaps I'm not realizing the potential of the system? Educate me.
Is there really any utility for a hard drive? What exactly are you saving on your hard drive?

Well, yeah, you basically hit it on the head with that. But what more are you looking for? To most, the fact that it plays PS3 games is the main reason to buy it (the same as for people who buy Wiis so they can play Wii games, XBOX 360s so they can play XBOX 360 games, etc.).

I bought mine in February, after the rush, for the Blu-Ray player. It didn't make sense to spend $1000 on a standalone BR player when for $600 you could get that AND a PS3.
I've never had any PS systems before but I rented a PS2 game once and it seemed to work fine. The PS3 games are great, but I will admit I only own two titles and don't play them too often.
As for the hard drive, that's where you save your game files. They can be saved to a regular flash drive also if you choose for portability. You can download game demos from the machine which will also reside on the hard disk, as well as pictures, etc...
It's a neat machine. If you get one and use it to watch movies definitely get the VCR style remote control. The game controllers suck for playback operation. The only thing I really don't care for is the noise the console makes. When it gets hot the fan really ratchets up and you can certainly hear it.

Is that it? Is that all hte hard drives are useful for?
As I understand it, there is a 20, 60 and now 80 gb PS3. Why would one even need SO MUCH MEMORY just to save game files? Seems like a ridiculously huge amount.
Any other input?
Can you view a disc of photos and then perahps save it to the hard drives?

Yes you can.. And ill tell ya - showing pictures on a 42" 1080p screen is really really cool. You can copy audio, video, game and picture files back and forth from the hard drive to pretty much any media.
Oh and if you have a Sony PSP you can access those files stored in ur ps3 anywhere in the world via Wi-FI..

You can browse the Internet from ur TV, watch utube videos, a party trick - but still fun

I'm thinking of getting one for Eric for Christmas. For someone who is mostly going to use it as a BR/DVD and game platform, is the 20GB drive sufficient? We have a 1TB networked HD for media storage, so that aspect doesn't really apply.

Do not mistake current generation game consoles for their earlier generation counterparts. A PS3 is a computer with a quick booting interface hooked up to your TV. It surfs the web it plays videos, it does any digital media you can feed through a USB connector.. etc etc. That's why I laughed so hard when retail outlets thretended to not sell violent PS3 games. You can just download them direclty into the machine.. while still playing other games, watching videos, watching movies or what ever else you happen to be doing.
Some nifty tricks. Yes, your PS3 will play your PS2 and PS1 games. And yes, you can transfer your saved game files from your library of old memory cards direclty onto your PS3s hard drive.
Yes, you can purchase online most every old PS1 or PS2 title and download it onto your PS3 if you want.
You can swap your saved game files from your PS3 onto a USB drive to go to a friends house.
The PS3 comes from the box Wi-Fi fucntional. Tieing it into your home network is as easy as turning it on. It will update itself with the latest software if you so choose.
The only shortcoming of the PS3 is the rather small title library for it right now. But I must say.. COD4 is freaking awesome. AC-130 mission 4tw
It should - but the 20GB version is discontinued. Smallest you can get now is 40GB. But that one doesn't play PS2 games.
Dont forget you can download a bunch of crap of the Playstation Store - Game Demos, HD movie trailers. Plus "Home" is comming - not sure how will that affect storage requirements if you choose to participate..

If you have the 80gb version. I bought the 60gb and it doesn't have the flash drive nor does it support a wireless internet connection.
Quoting Checkraiser (Reply 2): It's a neat machine. If you get one and use it to watch movies definitely get the VCR style remote control. The game controllers suck for playback operation.
That is a fact. Once you start the movie you might as well put the game controller down. It's useless save for pausing.
Quoting Checkraiser (Reply 2): The only thing I really don't care for is the noise the console makes. When it gets hot the fan really ratchets up and you can certainly hear it.
You have to make sure the bottom of the front of the player and the entire right side are free and clear for several inches. The thing gets incredibly warm for it's size. It needs a lot of space to draw cool air from.
Quoting Mirrodie (Reply 3): Why would one even need SO MUCH MEMORY just to save game files? Seems like a ridiculously huge amount.
You can use this thing like a huge media storage vault. As noted you can access the internet as well and download files so depending on what you are up to, 80gb ain't much.

Duane, bite the bullet, get the 80gb version and don't look back. It's the only mistake I made. It's worth the extra cash up front.

See that's why I like A.net, where else would I let complete strangers convince me to spend hundreds of dollars on a machine I could care less about! (ok, while some of you may still qualify as complete somethings, I guess I can't call you strangers. . . . )
Ok, advice noted, I guess he gets the gold standard.

Dude, I really need to get that. I bought Assassin's Creed instead. Highly recommend it, it's such an awesome game, really.
The only problem with PS3 is the cost of the games. At $60 a pop, you better be sure you the game you're getting is good.
Quoting RJdxer (Reply 8): nor does it support a wireless internet connection.
Really? I have the 60GB one, and I have wireless internet. Maybe you're thinking of a different one?

Check again. That's the one I have and it has both. Trust me, I've used them. The 20 GB didn't have it, but IIRC they discontinued that model shortly after launch.

No, it doesn't. It does not have the little panel in front that flips up and exposes all those usb/sd ports. I even called when we first got it and Sony support said that the feature was exclusive to the 80gb.

You dont need the little panel.
The little panel is only use full to put in memory card (SD, Memory Stick, ect) directly. But you can plug one of these suckers into the same USB port controllers are plugged into the PS3
These ones here
USB drive
alternately, you can use one of these..
You can even connect your digital camera directly into the PS3

As my daughter just pointed out, we have the 20gb ps3. Of course, just like you are right now, she rolled her eyes as she walked out of the room. I honestly thought we had the 60gb but then again, I just paid for it, I didn't pick it out.

Well I guess its nice. I email all our pics but there are some of hte older generation who aren't e-savvy ,so showing them on our 46" lcd would have a nice benefit. I can see that perk. I just wanted to make surethat I did not have to plug my ...Compact Flash card in to show pics. If I can just upload files from a disc, then its a nice perk.

I guess, in the final analysis, I won't have toom much a need for a hard drive. Perhaps that's where my son can use it.

Well, according to what was said above, sounds like you can just change out the hard drive for a bigger one, no? So not all is lost.
Soto get it straight right now you can get a 60 or 80 Gb version of this thign. And what are good prices?
And have you had any technical problems or heard of tech problems?
Thanks for sharing your views. Looking forward to hearing more.

Too bad you weren't in the market for one days ago. The FX manager that lives next door - his kid, the one that dressed up like a little terrorist, just got an early X-mas gift from me; my POS3. I love my Wii and X360 too much. There was dust on the PS3, if that helps your decision.

Now bear with me... I've been a long time playstation owner starting with PS1, PS2, and now looking at PS3. But I've got this one question...
When you buy a "classic" (disc) PS3 game, does the PS3 actually save the whole game onto the HD? Or does it just play straight off the disc like the PS2? My understanding of it is that the HD only saves game data, pictures, replays, and anything that you down load off the internet.

You know, maybe I'm looking at it all wrong. Truth be told, the games are secondary. I'm just looking to get a Blu Ray player and figured the PS3 would kill 2 birds with one stone.
I wouldnt mind a Wii. BUt after a while, they are all the same to me. MY brother has both the Wii and PS3. And all I play when I'm there is the Wii.
BUT I was playing some aircraft role game, Heatseeker I think. And I found the game play horrible, for flying

Depends on the game. Some games do mini installs, some have optional full install, some play straight off the disc.

In the final analysis, we'll probably end up with a PS3 based on Anet recommendations, but mroe importantly as it'll play Blu Ray for cheap
