Well folks, last night at work was the third time this has happened with our van, and this time I got to be the lucky driver. Yet again written up by airport security for not having our beacon on (Its one of those ones that is attached to the roof via magnet type thing, and with a cord that runs down and inside the door, and then to turn it on/off you simply plug it in or unplug it from the lighter). But here's the catch: it was plugged in, and it was working when I left the hangar. A bit of "jiggling" and on it went again. It appears we can plug it in all we want, but all it takes is a good bump (and trust me, between the kitchen and the terminal there is a lot of those) for the thing to loosen off just enough to turn the beacon off again.

Any tips on getting it to stay fully plugged in?

Does this light go from vehicle to vehicle? If not I would just hard wire it into the vehicle.

On the other hand the lighter socket, or as Volvo calls it, the 12 volt outlet may just need to be replaced. They kind of strech out after a bit of use.  wink

Try cleaning the electrical contacts on the plug - it could be that a layer of grot is reducing connectivity.

Duct Tape, it works every single time.

No. There's 2 vans and 2 or 3 trucks with this set up, but each has its own beacon.

I'll talk to our ground equipment mechanic next time I see him.

Well, it does get used 3-4 times in a day, 7 days a week

Will try this

I've often been tempted to, and one of these days I probably will...

Thanks for all the replies sofar

When I plug in my FM modulator, I found that I have to plug it in lighter socket a certain way, as the plug has contacts on two sides, but within outlet, there are some gaps in it, so if the plug and socket aren't lined up correctly, it doesn't work always...same with my trouble light...maybe some marks to help keep it properly aligned?
