Extract from http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport/hi/english/football/teams/m/man_utd/newsid_1801000/1801575.stm

Sir Alex Ferguson is poised to stay in charge of Manchester United for at least another year.

The Old Trafford manager, who was due to retire at the end of the season, has reportedly made a massive U-turn and is now prepared to extend his 15-year reign at the club. Manchester United spokesman Paddy Harverson told BBC Sport Online: "We are not commenting on the speculation at the moment."

But United are expected to make a statement to the Stock Exchange about Ferguson later on Tuesday. It is understood that Ferguson has told the Manchester United board that he is ready to see out the 2002/3 season. But he wants the situation regarding David Beckham to be resolved quickly.

And the Scot may even be convinced to manage things for longer before assuming a lucrative ambassadorial role at the club.

Leading names Ottmar Hitzfield, Fabio Capello and Sven-Goran Eriksson head the list of possible long-term replacements for Ferguson.

But the search for a successor has been suspended, the Daily Express reports, while Manchester United try to secure the continuing services of their most-successful-ever boss.

Can you imagine how much more United would be hated if they tried to tempt Sven away from England???

As a United fan I can say... WE DON'T WANT SVEN!!!

I've gotten so used to the idea that he would leave I don't really mind if he does. I wouldn't mind if he stayed either.  Smile

I hope Martin o'neil will take over United.

UPDATE!

Just on the Beeeeeeeeb website (same URL as before):

Manchester United have confirmed that they are in talks with Sir Alex Ferguson about renewing his contract as manager.

The Old Trafford boss was due to retire at the end of the season.

But he has made a huge U-turn and is now prepared to extend his 15-year reign at the club.

United issued a statement to the Stock Exchange confirming that the club is in talks with the 60-year-old.

"The board of Manchester United PLC confirms that it was recently approached by Sir Alex Ferguson on Sir Alex remaining as manager of the club beyond this season," the club said in a statement.

"The board has entered into discussions with Sir Alex and his advisors on a new contract.

"These discussions are continuing and a further announcement will be made in due course."

I think they'll have to arrange one of the derbies for mid-March 2003....we all need a dose of someone losing the plot on TV during an interview: any other time and the result won't probably matter.

I really want Fergie to stay cos' he is really an important person in MU.Everyone in the team respects him.I'm afraid if he leaves, there'll be a big change in MU,say Beckham will leave too.
By the way,who should be out of the MU's midfielders?(Beckham?Veron?Giggs?Keane?Scholes?or none?

That is Uniteds main problem. They have too many world class midfielders. Simply the best midfield squad in the world, and you really can't argue about that.

It seems Giggs has been the one urging Fergie to stay the most. And according to SKY the arrival of new United players such as Nistelrooy and Veron has given him the intrest in managing the worlds greatest football club back.

Btw, does anyone know howcome Blanc is the player on united who earns the most money?

No disrespect to the last two to post, but how indicative that neither of them is from England, let alone Manchester, yet both follow the Rags.

Apparently, during last season's Manchester derby, the Manchester City fans held out a banner to the United fans saying 'Welcome to Manchester!'

Now that's funny!  Big thumbs up

Actually, I think they arranged for a banner-towing aircraft to overfly Old Trafford with the message "Pride of Manchester - Manchester City".

If only they knew the history of City and Utd because they'd be shocked to know that Utd is Manchester's team and City are the strangers in paradise.

Fergie is taking liberties. If he wins anything this season, then he should go out with a bang while he's at the top. If he stays any longer and wins nothing in any of his remainder seasons, then it could end in tears!

That's right Ryan. No, Thom@s, I don't stipulate who you should or should not support, but Man Utd are a classic case of sussessful branding.

David, that is cobblers and you know it. Gorton and Ardwick (from whence City came) have always been in Manchester - and they return there next year!

I see. well, many people support Man Utd in Manchester aswell, and I don't see the problem why people outside the city, or the country for that matter, shouldn't support them.

The reason I support them is easy.

When I was young, my favourite colour was red, and whenever there was a footie match on, i cheered for the reds. So the first name I started connecting with a red team was United. as I grew up, I got to know the history of the club, and tadaa: A true red supporter was born.  Smile

Personally,I don't think he'll leave as he doesn't want to and MU don't want to lose him either, cos' he can help MU make a great deal of money and he's good at free kicks and crossings.I dare say no one in the world can do better than he does.

Thom@s, if only you could appreciate the true irony in that last paragraph! Big grin

Overseas is a slightly different matter, but in England you really should have some connection to the club you support. I'm sick of seeing people in south east England wearing Rags shirts, rather than supporting their local club. Picture the scene in the pub where a Darlington fan has just completed a 600 mile round journey to watch his team lose 4-0 and arrived in time for last orders at the bar. Sat at the bar is a red shirted tosser who's never been to Manchester (or even Salford) in his life who then says "You should support a decent team, mate!".  Angry

I have no problem whatever with people from in and around Manchester supporting United. But those who have no connection at all, but simply follow them from the comfort of their armchair because they are successful really get my goat.
