My parents are thinking about moving to Las Vegas. I'm currently a sophomore and at the earliest they want to move by next summer, before my junior year. In Virginia, we are accustomed to really great high schools. Some of the best in the country. It's the main reason we moved here from Arizona in the first place. My parents are particularly interested in the Summerlin and Lake Las Vegas areas. We visited on Saturday and thought they were nice places. Any locals know how the high schools are there?

Yes believe it or not, about 1.8 Million people actually live out here
It's interesting how your parents do not wish to wait a couple of years before moving. Instead they want to ship you off to a new place for your last two years of high school. On the one hand you lose relationships you have built with classmates over the years but on the other hand, by moving, you get a chance for a fresh start. Tough call.
Anyways, High Schools in Las Vegas are generally hit or miss however Summerlin area schools (Palo Verde, Cimarron-Memorial, Shadow Ridge, Centennial) are definitely above average.
There are not very many schools around the Lake Las Vegas area. Basic High School would probably be the school you would end up attending however I am not too sure how the school ranks academically. If you and your parents are seeking an area with many schools, I suggest looking in a different part of Las Vegas that's a bit more developed.
You might also have your parents explore a few private school options if the public school offerings don't meet your expectations.
I am a recent graduate of Coronado High School out in Henderson. Fantastic public high school that's run like a private high school. Coronado is located in the Anthem/Seven Hills community. Have you and your parents checked out that area yet? I highly recommend it.

I just helped my close middle/high school friend move to Vegas this past summer. Her dad found a job there. She is in college already and studies out in UCLA, so I can't vouch for high schools there at all. But if it helps... they moved to Summerlin, and they love it. I've visited her twice since they moved and it's a really quiet community, seems very safe.

No, we have just started looking into Vegas. We figured the home prices and proximity to family (Los Angeles area, San Francisco, Arizona, Colorado) would be a shoe-in (shue-in?). Anyway, I'm sure we'll be back to look at more places. No offense but as we drove through Henderson though, we weren't too impressed.

Well, we are still pretty cloudy on the high schools in Vegas, that's why I ask. If they really aren't that great, they'll just wait 2 years or force me to graduate early.

Another thing, does anyone know of any great golf courses to caddie at near Vegas? We have heard that there are some very high-paying spots out there, and that would be very beneficial to me and my father.

Well, Vegas has countless golf courses, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Get in tight with Steve Wynn and he might hook you guys up at the Wynn Golf and Country Club (on the old Desert Inn Golf Course site).....green fees are a cool $500.

That sounds like a great high-end course which is great, but I'm looking more for caddie fees.
Thanks for the help so far!

FYI, higher greens fees usually translate into higher caddie fees. Good luck with whatever you all end up doing.

If you have music talents, i.e. instrument, choir, band, or theater skills and/or dance, mariachi, and foreign languages, then check out the Las Vegas Academy. It's quite the distance from Summerlin and Lake Las Vegas, hell, I live in Green Valley (Henderson, if you want to get all technical...) and have to take to school buses to school. It's worth though. It's a really great environment. If you are into sports, mainly football, then check out Bishop Gorman. It's a few blocks away from LVA, so again, quite a distance. Just PM me if you need more details about the schools here..

There's Callaghan's golf course, and it's right next to LAS.

None taken. The area around Coronado and near Anthem is amazing IMO but to each, his or her own

Something to do with business or engineering that I enjoy. Mechanic for an airline maybe? I don't think I'll need to worry about that for high school though. I'll be about that when I'm in college.
I remember flying over the Callaway Golf Course on short final to LAS Saturday.

Um.... I couldn't remember that name for crap.. I was close though..
Quoting National757 (Reply 15): Ouch lol. What do you have against Coronado? Which high school did you attend?
There wasn't much diversity there. Every group of kids there (the White kids, Black kids, etc) were just so stuck up. Not everyone was, but the majority of them were, enough for me to explode and go to LVA.

I ask because there are schools here that have Tech Prep courses for a certain career, take for example, Rancho High School http://www.ccsd.net/schools/rancho/. It's a magnet school for kids who choose to be in the medical field and in the aviation field. I want to go a little, but don't want to leave LVA at all.
