I love this news station.

They had people from all different backgrounds, races, mothers, fathers, singles, and immigrants sit down and talk about how they feel about immigration reform. It's a video and there are some more from on that page. Different people giving their own view which should be done more often!

I went into a Target store a few months ago. I asked the clerk in there if she knew where the mens gloves were cause its getting too cold outside. She gave me a blank stare! Come to find out she couldn't speak English if at all very well. How does she have a job at a big box store? Why are people getting upset when you say "Mexican Immigrants"? Now the issue is "why are you putting race in immigration? I say because they are the ones who are making the most noise! When those rallies started in 06 I saw tons of MEX flags being waved. HA

I, as a Black American, do not think that people should just come here and drop down without knowing out language and be able to get jobs, no matter if its something most Americans won't do. I don't fully buy that crap anyway.

I hope any candidate I support answers this question and becomes tough on immigration. We really can't do anything about the 10+ million that are here. But everything is being made in Spanish on products now and signs and making it easier for them to not want to learn English. Crap!

Tsaord, come on now, you are being insensitive. Don't you think it is your obligation to learn Spanish so you don't inconvenience the poor Target clerk?  sarcastic

My view on the great illegal immigration debate is once you're here and have any negative contact with the government you get tossed back to Mexico. No questions asked. If you're here and working and self-supporting then that's fine and dandy.

BUT...the first time you have negative contact with the police and any hospital you get sent back. Don't expect free treatment or special treatment because you don't have a license, insurance and don't speak a lick of English.

Why should I have to pay for someone who isn't a legal citizen to go to the hospital, get treated, and to NOT receive a single bill for their visit?

I encounter a combination of this on an almost daily basis.

illegal immigration

Was the Target clerk working illegally?

Why is it the clerks fault? Did she force Target to hire her? No. Target hired her. Dont get mad at the poor woman. Write a letter to Target and tell them that you want to be attended in Queen's English only and that they should review their hiring policies if they want to keep your business.

It is the system that is enabling the use of Spanish. If you are going to get pissed at the situation - get pissed at the right person (store - or whatever)

Because it is crap. It's an outright lie, and all ends of the government are partaking in it and forcing it down the throat of an America that can and should know better. Pay people decently and they'll do any kind of work. Promote the lowest common denominator and that's what you get, hence the current situation where we have companies left and right running amok and hiring whomever will work for the least. It's exploitative, it's disgusting, and it's anti-American.

And that's why I never buy their products. Kids in Pakistan make the world's soccer balls too. Anyway, the subject of this thread is immigration TO the US.

Sure its related. Illegals "exploit" the US - the US "exploits" workers overseas. Karma? Perhaps...

The issue of immigration in the USA - legal and illegal - is a very complex political and social issue. Sound bites by politicians nor absolutes of 2 sides will not deal with this issue properly. That a local TV station did try to collect a range of views on immigration is a very tiny but critical part of the process to deal with this issue.
I do wish that many employers would require fluency in English to be mandatory not just for dealing with the public in a more productive way, but for their own safety and protection. I can understand the need of persons to speak other languages in some jobs, and often in Spanish, but other languages as 2nd languages may be needed depending on where you live. In my area, North Eastern New Jersey, it can include not only Spanish, but also Arabic, Greek, French, Haitian, Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Tagalog and so on.

How US companies treat their employees is very relevant to immigration to the US, since the practice of "promoting the lowest common denominator" (as you put it) is creating a demand for immigrants who will work for the lower wages that the companies want to pay.

II agree. If i owned a store id make sure everyone would be able to speak English.

Amongst themselves or to help Spanish speaking -only costumers is a bonus

US doesn't have a "national language". The thing is, my family all understand English even though my parents and aunts and uncles are all immigrants. They lived in Los Angeles since late 1980's. I wouldn't understand the hardship most immigrant family goes through cus even my grandparents speak English well.

HOWEVER, I do agree that if one is to come to US, they should have a certain level of English fluency (or Spanish if you're living in Los Angeles  tongue  ) in order to live in the States. It doesn't have to be full-on fluent, but I think basic English skills should be required. Funny thing is for H-1 visa, Green Card, and citizenship, an interview is necessary before USCIS approve the documents. I'm not quite sure why some people have the legal documents and still don't speak English. Too afraid to speak or something? Maybe?

Illegal immigrant, BAD...legal immigrant, GOOD.

That being said, I still think immigrants should keep their roots. I will make my kids to learn Mandarin and personally sit down and do his homework with him over the weekend. I feel it is extremely important for me and my children to keep in mind that we're Taiwanese and unless my kid and grandkid go on and marry Caucasians (or other races) and dilute the Taiwanese blood, we're gonna be Taiwanese for life. Big grin

Okay; you might want to proof read, or are you just talking about speaking American style English?

I also deal with illegal immigration every working day in our initial appearance court, although 90% are from Mexico, here in Arizona, we see illegals from other countries such as Iraq, Iran, France, Canada, and the other central and south american countries. What is sad, some of the probable cause statements that the police report as the reason to make contact with some of these individuals, example: I was looking for the suspect that was described as a mexican male, and (defendant) fit that description. Hello, half of Arizona and California matches that description.

Queen's English only; if that the case, Target and Wal-Mart wouldn't be able to hire anyone.

I wish we would just shut our borders and go into a period of isolationism. I want these people out, no crying in the media, no whining, just get them out. Illegals are a plague on our society, they consume our resources and they need to be sent away. We no longer want your tired, your poor, or your huddled masses yearning to be free. Go somewhere else. If you want to come here, fill out the paperwork and follow the procedures.

Nice Trip Report!!! Great Pics, thanks for posting!!!! B747Forever

I'm not pissed at anyone. I just recounted a situation I was in recently and found it rather odd that it's happening.

That's why minimum wage is such a joke. It's just a front for politicians to gain votes. No health benefit programs paid.No company insurances needed.
