My Shower Head Sounds Like A JT8D!

I thought about posting this when I started the water flowing for my shower at 4:50am this morning. The shower head makes it sound just like a JT8D! And since I live out in the sticks and have water from a well, the pressure slowly fluctuates as the pump cycles on and off so it gradually sounds as though it powers back to cruise and descent as the pressure tank empties, then rapidly spools up to takeoff thrust then the pump cycles on again!

I used to have a massaging shower head and it sounded like a Chinook or a V-22 Osprey.

Try some Lime-out. On the shower head, not the JT8D.

You need to get a bigger tank or adjust the pressure at which the pump cuts on. This really shouldn't be noticeable. The other possibility is that the pump is on its last legs. I had the same symptoms once and that's what it was. Unfortunately, the casing was corroded and we weren't able to get the pump out and ended up having to drill a new well. $$$

Funny, they sound quite a bit different to me.

Naw, everything is in good working order. I have the cut-in and cut-off ranges set very wide on purpose. It cuts in at about 30 and cuts off at abour 65. The tank and pump are fine, it takes the pump (Grundfos 1HP) about one minute (with no outflow) to fill the tank from 30 to 65 PSI and it takes the shower about 4 or 5 minutes to draw it back down to 30. It has always run like that. Most people wouldn't notice it but I am really nerdy that way.  Wink

Like a Hughes 500 maybe?

I used to live in a really crummy apartment where the shower sounded like a engine about to throw a rod. When the pipes would start to bang you knew to stand out of the way because either the water was going to get very hot or very cold. After a while I knew how much the temperature was going to change by the pitch of the sound.

V-22 is similar but with some extra harmonics from the second rotor disc(and slightly different orientation at times)  Smile

I kept mine much closer, ~ 15 psi IIRC. You really couldn't tell it wasn't city water other than it tasted much better.

Don't stop taking showers. Use your head and replace the shower head.

The scanner in the computer lab at our detachment sounds a lot like the flap system on a 757.

You should install a parachute reverser on the thing then, since that's the coolest part of the JT8D engine.  wink   silly

Strangely enough, I thought about doing that. I'll see what I can do. You'll have to ignore the singing in the background though.  Wink

Not to be crass or childish but have any of ya'll experimented with the various sounds you can get from putting hands over your ears while the shower spray hits the back of your head? I've been able to get it at just the right spot where it sounds like that awesome bass-filled crackle and pop from the SRBs in a space shuttle launch  Smile

Stick a hush kit on it. I am sure you can find one on Ebay if you look hard enough.

It brings new meaning to the term 'wet thrust'.
