Seeing as the previous thread 2008 A.net LAS Meet PT 2: Pair Of Deuces.... (by Srbmod Oct 12 2007 in Non Aviation) got archived a few weeks ago, time to start a new thread. I had been debating whether to wait until the after the first of the year, but decided to go ahead and do a new thread.

For those of you just turning in, here's the rundown:

Dates: April 4-6, 2008

The heart of the Meet is April 4th and 5th, but some folks will be getting there on the 3rd, and some folks will be staying until the 7th (or later). There will probably be some stuff thrown together for the evening of the 3rd and for the 6th, but most of that won't get started until we have an idea of what dates the attendees will be there for.

4/5: TBD
4/6: Those of us still in town go casino hopping?
4/7: If you've not left town by now, you're on your own.......

Quite a bit of info is posted in the Part 2 thread linked earlier in this post.

The Return Of The Room Rates:
All rooms "deluxe" unless otherwise indicated

4/04: $169.00
4/05: $169.00
4/06: $ 89.00

Capri (3 Story Motel Block 100yds from Main Tower.):
4/03: $ 89.00
4/04: $159.00
4/05: $159.00
4/06: $ 79.00

Harrah's
4/03: $120.00
4/04: $225.00
4/05: $250.00
4/06: $130.00

At some of these properties, there are other rooms besides the ones listed, but are more expensive then the ones listed.

For those of you just tuning in, the reason why these hotels are the ones I've listed, these are where for the most part, the majority of the folks stay at. You're not committed to stay at those properties, these just are the most convenient to where the group meets up and hangs out at (O'Sheas).

Here's a brief field report from my recent trip out there. There were some things I didn't get a chance to check out, like Hofbrauhaus, mainly because I ended up having to tighten my budget after getting hit in the casinos pretty hard early on.

O'Sheas is still there. They've moved some of the blackjack tables from up front and put them in the back of the casino by the poker room. They replaced them with other table games. They've also got beer pong at the back bar by the food court. You buy the pitcher(s), they provide the cups and ping pong balls.

View from my room @ Harrah's (8th Floor Marti Gras Tower):

I spent part of Saturday just walking around and exploring. The Wildlife Habitat at The Flamingo is pretty cool. I ended up going over there several times as it's a good place to decompress after gambling.

That night, I went to see Penn & Teller @ Rio. If you've never seen them, I highly recommend it. It's quite entertaining and interesting. They even go out into the lobby after the show for autographs and photos.

And just for you Superfly, I saw this on the Flamingo website.
Gino Vannelli 2/22-2/23/2008

I guess you may have to take an early trip to Vegas. He's moving up the ladder and is playing The Strip.....

LogansGirl's contract ends on April 5th, but we're trying to ensure that she ends work on Thursday, so we're hoping to be there by Friday evening and will probably stay three nights at Flamingo. Good to hear O'Shea's is still going, but I liked the blackjack tables out by the street with the doors open...one of the few casinos where you can tell what time of day it is.

Excellent, hopefully things will work out and we won't have to start a thread in your honor this time around......  duck

I meant to add in the thread starter that I was planning on going ahead in the next few weeks and reserving a rental vehicle just in case. If it's not needed, I can just cancel it before the trip.

Hey, Srbmod, have you checked the rates at all the other hotels in the valley i.e. Green Valley Ranch Station, Red Rock H&C? Or are you just focusing on the famous 9 mile piece of road?

Just along the Strip, mainly because of access to the Deuce and the Monorail. Some of the prices off-Strip are as expensive as some of the higher end properties on the Strip. If I was going to be paying $1000 for four nights, I'd probably chose the Bellagio over GVR.

Good point... as a side note, it is possible to access the Deuce/Monorail via other routes, but I digress.  Smile

Actually it's not. The cheap rates in general are Sunday-Thursday (with some exceptions, like during major conventions) and the rates for Friday and Saturday being the highest. Sunday-Thursday tends to be the slowest days for many casinos, with Thursday being the busiest of the weekdays, as many folks that are coming out for the weekend get there on Thursdays. My first trip to Vegas back in 2004, the room rate for Thursday night was double what I had paid per night Sunday-Wednesday (Check out Thursday). Heck, what I paid back then for four nights @ The Riviera (including the $75 booking fee from the site I booked it through) was less than what many places charge per night these days even during the "slow" times.

From what I can find, the school districts in the Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas areas look like they will be doing Spring Break in March, most of them around Easter, some earlier in the month. Same goes with UNLV, UCLA, USC, University of Arizona, and Arizona State.

.It sorta depends on how much I lose when I go to Vegas in January

I dropped between $600-700 myself last month out there. I should have remembered why slot machines are called one-armed bandits, as I ended up playing the slots a lot more than usual as I couldn't always get a seat at a $10 blackjack or if there was a $10 table, it was a multi-shoe deck (While I used to be decent at a multi-deck shoe, I prefer a single deck game despite the crummy payout for blackjack.).. Come April, I'm going to stick with playing blackjack, with maybe a session or two at the craps table, a little bit of sports betting and at least one go at a poker tournament over @ O'Sheas. I played in one there this last trip and finished 9th out of 26 players. I had one hand that started out being dealt pocket Kings. Then comes the flop, trip 10s (The inspiration for the title of this thread BTW). I go all-in because there was only a handful of ways I could lose. I get one player to call (they ended up going all-in as a result) with Jack nine suited. Then the turn, ANOTHER 10. Essentially the best my opponent could do would be a split pot if an Ace showed up on the river, which didn't happen (I can't even remember what the river card was). I was doing fine in the tournament until they balanced out the tables and was moved to another table. I missed a few chances to increase my chip count but managed to be among the chip leaders when they merged the two tables. I lasted about 100 minutes, which is better than the 15 I lasted back in March.

I wouldn't wait too long in regards to Casino Royale, as it's a very small property, with 152 rooms. Anyway, most hotels only require the first night's rate (+ taxes) as a deposit in order to reserve a room (which is why it's better to book directly through a hotel as opposed to a travel site). If your  dollarsign  situation doesn't look so good, you can cancel and get your money back.

Here's a humorous review of the Casino Royale:

I've gone in their casino a few times to gamble. Lost $100 there this last trip at the blackjack table.

Trust me, I'm not cheap (although the CV pages amuse me as well.). I'm just tight on my budget until I get my place paid off.  Wink (which is sooner than you would think with someone my age.)

I just have 4 requirements of a Vegas hotel:

1: a secure door.
2: a clean bed.
3: a clean bathroom.
4: no bugs.

The other things I can pick up as I go.

Plus, the Casino Royale is as close to the meeting point as I'm going to get with those rates. I lucked out last year with IP.
