edit: CNN also now reporting same. No further info yet.

I wonder if Tina is shedding a tear, or could care less.... A whole lotta water under that bridge by now.

It's been swell, but the swelling has gone down.

No argument here about his character, and wouldn't want to eulogize him. However, it has to be said that Ike was also a major, major musical pioneer. His song 'Rocket 88', from 1951, has been called 'the first rock'n roll song', and definitely sounds like it. That would be a hell of a legacy; too bad he screwed it up later, however I still thought it should be pointed out: can't escape the fact that he's a very significant musical figure.

My friends and I at school would always play Ike and Tina. One of my friends would order and demand and pretend hit us and we'd yell, "Get away from me, Ike!!" even though she was a girl... fun, fun...

Another reminder of what an amazing woman Tina Turner is. I'm curious to see if she shows up at his funeral (my guess is she will)....

To see him "Rolling! Rolling! Rolling down the river...."

-Aloha!

P.S. Tina's "Proud Mary" is my #1 favorite song of All Time!

My thoughts exactly.

What bothers me is that Ike Turner made Tina into a star and it seems that even today she has little gratitude for that. I don’t condone what he did and don’t know much about it, but Ike Turner gets frequently overlooked as one of the most instrumental, albeit not as much of a shining star, musicians who inspired rock n roll.

Without Ike Turner, there is no Jerry Lee Lewis.
Without Jerry Lee, Sun Records folds.
Without Sun Records, post-Elvis, there’s no Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, no landslide of rock n roll that soon changed the world.

Of course, I still think of Chuck Berry as the father of rock n roll, but that’s a different thread altogether.

She shouldn't have to show any gratitude for it. Sure, he gets credit for finding her, but that is incredibly overshadowed by the fact that he beat the living piss out of her for years.

Tina's official statement about Ike:

"Tina is aware that Ike passed away earlier today. She has not had any contact with him in 35 years. No further comment will be made."

An interview with Tina from 1993

A Clip of the abuse from the her bio-pic "What's Love Got to Do With It" (skip the 1st 1 minute for the "good" stuff)

Based on Tina's version, it was VERY bad.

They are responsible for each other's success. Without Tina he may never have become famous as he did. If he was honest he would probably admit she was the best thing to ever happen to him.

Also, note that when she left him she took no money, only her name (Tina Turner.) She actually owed him millions for cancelled tour dates. She worked her ass off after she left him to pay it off, and build her solo career. It took her 10 years of doing shows in hotels and Vegas before she recorded her hit solo album in the 80s. For any 40+ year old "has been" to stage a comeback like she did is remarkable, especially in the entertainment industry.

She was much more famous in her comeback than she ever was with Ike. Her solo sucess probably made him richer by increasing sales of their older music. I don't think she owed him a gosh darn thing.

Also, she "adopted" of his kids from other women, and they all took her side post-abuse/divorce. They were there.

He [apparently] was very bad with Tina and his children.
