I really need some opinions, mainly Pro views for the U.S ending the Open-Door policy, so if you guys could tell me why the U.S should close its borders and please back your decision, i would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks to all who respond.

Immigration. Allowing students from other countries, basic immigrants coming over and claiming political assylum, that type of immigration.

I say slam the door and throw away the key. We have done enough for the rest of the world, and they are forever ungrateful for it. All we get from current immigration is other countries malcontents and cast offs. Our social programs are inflated enough as it is.

I have an argument for 'against' any significant curtailment of immigrant quota. But since you're looking at the pro-side, I won't present my idea here. If you're still interested in my view, let me know.

Here it goes...

While US there's no doubt that US needs to revise its policies, US should be careful not to overreact.

If borders were to be closed so tight that it starts to restrict trade movements in a significant way, it will take a major hit on the economy. Not only will US suffer, rest of the world will take a toll as many nations basically live off exports destined for US. Probably not the smartest thing to do when economy isn't doing so great.

I heard some suggestions that they should start defending the Canadian border. While customs at the border needs to be beefed up, there are smarter ways to spend money than a massive build up at the Canadian border.

So what can be done? How about a better intelligence gathering mechanism? How about setting up an enhanced network to share intelligence data with allies? Such system is already in place with Britain, Canada and US.

Why should the US close immigration doors? The Europeans that started America stole land from the indians, so they're immigrants too.

Thanks a lot, good point. I also have to say that I stand in the middle, no closing them down fully, however, reinforcing our borders.

Ending its Open-door policy is one thing, but reducing immigration is another. Just because we are advocates of ending the open border deal, doesn't mean that immigration should be restricted as a whole. It should be regulated.

767-332ER,

Just as a side note, you should reference somewhere in your paper how Bush has used 9/11 as an excuse to legitimize increasing militarization of US. Just a couple years ago, the world as a whole spent $810 billion on military. With the new budget, US will spend just under $400 billion on its military alone. You don't need to be a genious to figure that US military spending is almost on a 1:1 basis with the rest of the world.

Btw, immigration is regulated.
Do you know the lead time for processing immigration claims is? It's around 10 years. Yes, 10 years! And US arguably has the highest standards for immigration. The amount of money an average immigrant (not including those sponsored by family) must be wiling to invest in US is probably more than an average American's life savings.

Good point. I do agree though with the plan to increase the military force in the U.S. Don't forget that this spending will go towards reinforcing our borders on land and out in the sea. The Coast Guard will receive a hefty sum of this money for new ships and equipment, since a great deal of illegals arrive by way of sea. I agree with Bush and the administrations decision. Thanks once again. You have been extremely helpful.

I'd disagree. I don't know the numbers, but I think that a few news footages of Cuban rafts really blew this percetion out of proportion.

Btw, illegal immigrants are not all bad. I'd even dare say that California wouldn't function without cheap labor afforded by plentiful Mexicans.
An interesting bite from today's newspaper: Mexican's crossing over to California actually decreased since 9/11. They want to be with their families and feel that Mexican economy is on the upswing.

Cuba, no, I am talking about the Asian smuggling that goes on. I read it somewhere, I believe it was TIME, I really can't remember, but the Asian market is huge in immigration.

Bombstar so eloquently said:

Aparthoid,
Anyone tell you your a fag?

That looks like a typo to me. First, you spelled my name wrong leading me to believe you don't know what it means. Second, I am quite certain you meant to say "God I wish you were a fag." Thirdly, your statement is, as usual, grammatically incorrect. The proper spelling of the contraction for "you are" is "you're." Now, get off the net and go do your homework, you obviously need the practice.

For the sake of argument, since you seem to have so many intelligent things to add to the forum, what does my views on immigration have to do with my sexual preference? Or were you just unable to make a valid argument, so you started your usual name calling antics? Hold on, I see you are only 12.. now I understand. Why don't you go back to the Harry Potter forum with the other "mature" kids your age.

Bombstar, stop with those dumb ass remarks....

Don't make us americans come up north to take over your beer factories...lol.

Anyways I realy think we should start to shut off our ties with mexico, terrorist supporting countries, people who do not know english, people who will just live off the government the rest of their lives. If your coming to LOOK for a job, hit the road, we have many people looking for jobs right here in USA, but if you all ready have a job, then that's great. Get papers and live here as long as need.
