And I got to tell ya, it never looked better! The car chase scene is just amazing. There are so many details you just never when they play it on TV. I've got a 42 inch plasma and that along with the surround sound just make it like being in the theater.
On a side note, I wonder how much of the car chase scene route looks anything like it did back then, now.

Quoting Boeing4ever (Reply 2): Blue Ray vs. HD-DVD. Has that been settled yet?
I don't think it ever will be. Some titles just will never be available on blue ray. I have both a PS3 which came with a blue ray player in it, and a hddvd player. I have to give the edge to the blue ray. It just seems more crisp.

Fantastic. Now, I ask, the PS3 can play both formats or is it two players? I heard format compatibility was an issue...that you couldn't have one player play regular DVD, HD-DVD, and Blue Ray.
LG has just come out with a new player, albeit expensive, that plays Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. It is one machine with two separate drives, kind of like a DVD/VHS combo. I know I've got my eyes set on it...

They sure have. $999 at Best Buy. Don't think it's worth that much.

I was wondering how some of the older movies were going to look, since they were not originally recorded in HD. Glad to hear that the conversion process is doing something right. I will have to go out and pick up some older stuff. I have Blu-Ray as well.

I thought I read somewhere that either Samsung or Toshiba is also making a combo player as well. I think it was in the same price range.

hmmmm, needs two drives. There's an interesting window into the matter. So much for one drive-all compatible.

That's why I'd rather let those poor "keep ahead of the Jones'" saps pay for the development of the A models, or hopefully, we'll settle on one format like the thread starter here. Or, even better, the companies that make these films will release them in all available formats. But that's not going to happen. At least it looks like Blue Ray is winning.

VHS may have won the home user, but Beta won the war for professional users.
Until the next generation DVD format is solidified and the current format for DVDs is discontinued, I'll stick with what I have. Plus I'll want to have the HD TV to go with it as well.
The car chase set a new standard for film. Check the special features for how it was done.
The thing that ruins my "willing suspension of disbelief" is that during the chase, they pass a VW Beetle, a 68 Le Mans and some parked cars several times while always going downhill. Also, the Mustang has a standard rear axle and not "Traction Lock". What a puss!
The BEST part is the SFO chase at the end. There's some great footage of PA 707's and PSA 727's. Mc Queen did all of his own stunts.
I really miss the old SFO. What a beautiful place it was. It was at SFO that I saw my first "Moonie".
Quoting PSA53 (Reply 10): Remember the VHS vs. Beta war.
Oh yes. I fought in that war. Someday I'll have to find a Beta1 machine and dub my videos to DVD.

True, and now magnetic tape is being replaced by memory cards. I remember shooting with a Bolex 16mm camera and a turret lens. We used to actually meter the ambient light to figure out an f-stop and ......

No and it never will. The formats will live side by side. We'll go through this phase of BR vs HD DVD but it will be over the moment one of the major supporter of a particular format cedes to the other and includes their type in a dual format machine much the LG (who are a fence sitter) have done. That will happen once all the fence sitters develop dual format players and consumers buy it because it gives them more options.
Blu-Ray has been given a boost due its inclusion in the playstation 3. I would imagine an updated Xbox will get a built in HD DVD player at some point, but it's currently an accessory that's not overly popular.

Looks like dual-format it is. Though...

Just goes to show that sometimes standardization is a good thing.

It looks like one drive to me. Or, are there two separate drives underneath the cover?
