The socialist ex-major of Montpellier -and now president of the region Languedoc Roussillon (France ) wants to purchase a Lenin-monument he adored in Seattle and tranfer it to his city...
George Frèche has been persistantly making the news,by calling the Harkis (former Algerian allies of France) "Untermenschen" ,suggesting that the French police burns down cars to create a climate of instability, call the Rugbyteam of France due to it's coloured members "not French any longer ." and other stupid remarks..
Considering this senile a.hole is president of a large French region, one can wonder what qualifications it takes to become a politician in France....

Yes, indeed there is. As much as a don't care for Wikipedia as a source, its description of the statue and its history is the most succinct I could find:

I could write a book with all the stupid comments and ideas this crook has come up with..
Some years ago he suggested that Lufthansa would put a hub for African flights into Montpellier ...
(But he did nothing to save the defunct airline Air Littoral, which was based in Montpellier.)
Of course the cost for the Lenin monument would have to be born by the local tax-payer..
He's an ex university professor (history - about 70 years old..) and should be busy with his roses in his garden rather than wasting tax -payers money on his wet-dreams.( He also wanted to re-name the region from Languedoc Roussillon into "Septimanie" -an undertaking that swallowed many, many millions of € and was abandoned after some time..)

Keep in mind, its in a neighborhood that has a troll under a bridge, a summer solstice parade (complete w/ naked bike riders) and a cold war missile casing. And lest you think poor Lenin gets much respect, he's dressed in drag for Pride each year! Big grin

Probably the qualifications are very similar to those required to become a politician anywhere in the world....  Cool

What's sad is you *know* every one of those people in Fremont would drop dead of a massive coronary if there were a statue of Bush or an inorganic turnip in town Silly

That would've been true even about five years ago, but lately the neighborhood is so yuppiefied that its lost a lot of its eclectic character. I think the biggest concern of most residents these days is exactly how they're going to get their H3 or or similar into parking spots and underground garages designed for the Prius! (Have you tried to park at Whole Foods lately? Big grin)
