A man who allegedly threw a boy off a pedestrian freeway overpass yesterday was occasionally asked to care for the toddler and recently had been sent for psychiatric evaluation, police said.

Matthew M. Higa, a 23-year-old Roosevelt High School graduate, was arrested yesterday in connection with the death of the boy.

Higa allegedly dropped the toddler 30 feet from the Miller Street overpass onto H-1 Freeway at about 11:40 a.m. where one or two west-bound cars struck the boy. The toddler was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:07 p.m. The medical examiner did not release the name of the child.

I've got to say that when I heard about this I didn't know how to react. Even though I got stuck in the resulting traffic (2 hours to go 4 miles) it was impossible to get even remotely angry.

Its been a bad few days for senseless deaths in Hawai'i. On Monday night a 30 year old mother of five was beaten to death on a street with a shotgun by her ex-boyfriend after he chased down with his SUV and crashed into her car repeatedly. A 69 year old man was seriously injured trying to help her.

I really don't understand what is wrong with some people these days!!

Just a few days ago, didn't some guy throw four of his kids off a bridge, I can't remember if it was Florida, or New Orleans, you just get numb to it.
During my career, it got to the point, where you would response to a fatal auto accident, murder scene, or suicide you end up treated the victim as a object and not a real person, the really bad ones were where kids were involved. Still I can't imagine anything much worst that telling a parent their child is dead.

Unfortunately, that's the case.

I assisted at a Roll-Over of a Tractor Trailer a year or two ago . . . a mess. The driver, dead - crushed - pinned under the cab. Well below zero (F) temperature. Everything freezing into the snow. For days after that, I'd drive past the scene and still see the "color" in the snow and ice pack.

You get numb for certain.

Unless it's someone you know - been there, done that also.

I'll be there in 20 days . . . Maui that is . . . hope the trend doesn't continue.

Incredible . . . H-1 is always asshole to elbow traffic . . .

Sad news. What could have possessed this person to do this?

Sick individual.

Truly disturbing and sad to read. There have been a few too many cases like that around where I live in the past few years, parents wanting to end it all but deciding to take their kids with them - just not fair, poor guys never had a proper chance at life.

A few months back a family member was driving early one morning along a deserted section of duel carriageway and came across someone sprawled in the middle of the road, having jumped off a bridge. He parked up across the lanes and stayed with her, she pulled through I believe, but with such a small body as a toddler, he didn't stand a chance from that height.  Sad

May not have been the fall . . . not very long drop from that bridge to the H1 - I'm betting getting plastered by oncoming traffic was certainly the cause . . .

Very true, and I suppose they do say kids of that age 'bounce'. Sadly not enough though...

For the guy who killed the kid?

The guy who beat his girlfriend to death with a shotgun?

or both?

Wait, sadly no death penalty in Hawai'i. Though everyone at work today was in favor of it for both of these cases....atleast 6 people witnessed each act close up. The guy who dropped the kid reminds me alot of the Xerox Massacre a few years back. That guy (Byran Uesugi) also had some mental problems, and one day he snapped and killed 9 of his co-workers.

I just don't understand people.

sad

PS. I guess alot of people are having trouble coping with this. The State Department of Help has set a phone line for people to call for coping/counseling. http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar...e/2008/Jan/18/br/br0641782539.html

Okay I was wrong, it was Alabama, last week..1/9/08

(CBS/AP) A man angered after a dispute with his wife confessed to tossing his four young children off a bridge, authorities said Wednesday as they searched murky waters for the bodies.

Lam Luong, 37, who is charged with four counts of capital murder, told authorities Tuesday night that he drove to the Dauphin Island bridge and dropped the children from a span that reaches 80 feet in places, said Detective Scott Rivera.

Luong came to coastal Alabama from Vietnam in 1984 and worked in the commercial fishing industry as a shrimper, Police Chief John Joyner and a relative said. He had argued with his wife, Ngoc Phan, before taking the children, he said.

Missing and presumed dead were 4-month-old Danny Luong; 1-year-old Lindsey Luong; 2-year-old Hannah Luong; and 3-year-old Ryan Phan. Phan is not the man's biological child, but Luong raised him from infancy, authorities said.

The boy has been identified. Cyrus Belt, would have turned 2 on Feb. 7.

An update about his family...

Wait, sadly no death penalty in Hawai'i.

The guy who threw his four kids off the Dauphin Island Bridge in Mobile has already been charged with four counts of capital murder as Aircop has noted. It's a pretty safe bet that he'll end up paying for his crime unlike if he'd done this in HI. Crackheads and parenting do not go well together.
