Just wanted to ask for an auto opinion if possible. We currently have a VW Golf which I bought from a friend's dad who wanted to get rid of it (I like the VW cars from the 80s 90s(!)). One of its features however is that although the manual slider moves to different positions for directioning fan air to feet, main, front windscreen the flow never directs from the front windscreen long holes. Was wondering is it really difficult to remove the front panel of the vehicle to view what's happening and hopefully fix this air flow problem(!)
Was thinking of going to the local library to pick up a VW service manual just to look but wondering just in case anyone might have experiece with vehicles in general here.

I had something similar happen on a Honda Civic. In my case, the hand control pushed/pulled a long cable that ran through housing (like a bicycle shift cable, only rigid) to a small bellcrank. I forget what the exact fix was, but I remember it being simple. I think I just had to reconnect the end fitting that attached to the bellcrank.
Ultimately, I had the entire cable replaced, though. Mine was getting old and tough to move. The replacement cost something like $20, and it worked like new. Really smooth and easy to move.

I have a bit experience (17 years) with Canadian models, but when I moved back to Norway I found the local models there had some differences from what I was used to. Some US models were also different.
My best advice would be to pick up a Chilton manual, there are tons of things you can learn from it and it will pay for itself when you find out all the stuff you can do yourself.

I don't know much about VW, but they seem to be like most other cars, if your dash heater vent cable/servo motor is broken, you'll probably end up taking off the ENTIRE Dash board and front console. Unless you really know what you're doing, have a repair shop do it.
My Parents had the same problem with their 2000 GMC Van, and it was 75 USD to fix it (before the dollar took its plunge, its probably about 100 USD now).

Just wanted to say many thanks for the replies. Will maybe go tomorrow to try to look for the manual in the library. I guess it involves taking off the front panel (something I'm always puzzled a little with because in every car I've seen I've never seen any screws or visible means of how a panel is fixed on!). I was imagining the air might be running through plastic tubes with circular valves which can open and close by rotating connected by cables to the levers but that's probably more my imagination than reality(!) The car is in the Uk (also without a/c) and the final thing I don't get (but also like) about it is how it goes so fast with a small engine - it's like VW built this vehicle that drives naturally 80mph!

What year is the car? I have a Golf/ Jetta/ GTI manual that i don't need anymore, perhaps that may help. I'm looking at it right now and they are controlled by a cable assembly which requires removal of some dash trim, but it looks pretty straightforward. If you can tell me the year of the car I can get the information for you. I go to school for automotive technology and i have access to manufacturer repair literature. I'll get you the complete repair procedures if you'd like.
