Calling all Thailand Airliners.net members.
I should have started this thread long ago. Sorry for the late notice.
Any of you members up for a BKK meet? I'll be over here for the month and it would be cool to put together a Airliners.net meet here at Suvarnabhumi.
I know of several members here already.
Let me know what you all think.

Quoting Flying Belgian (Reply 1): We used to have some wonderful shots there, which is n longer the case at Suvarnabhumi...
Well there is that one road that runs along side one of the runways. That is a very vantage point to get heavies at rotation.
BKK gets lots of 747 and A340 traffic as well as the Aeroflot IL-96.
How often does Air Koryo send their IL-62 in from North Korea?
Air Koryo does have an office here in Bangkok.

If anyone knows the time slots for some of the more exotic aircraft would be great. I really want to see the Air Koryo IL-62.
The Aeroflot IL-96 is daily but leaves rather early (12:00PM). I am usually just getting up at that time.

Man, if I had at least several months notice, I could've attended. We definately needed a meet in Asia. Apparently, I just got back to Tokyo from the U.S. and have very little vacation days til summertime. Oh well, maybe next year.

You know I'd agree with that, how about planning for a BKK meet sometime next year, around this time when the North Americans and Northern Europeans are completely fed up with cold, grey weather and want to go somewhere hot for a bit? I'd certainly be up for it.

Copy that.
Some time early in 2009 would be appreciated, even though it is the season of the highest air fares from Europe and Award flights almost never available. But with some interesting routing to BKK and some intra-Thailand flights things would start to become interesting ...
Several years ago, we flew from AMS to HKG with KL and then on a seperate ticket on CI to BKK (return the same routing) due to no availability of (affordable) flights to BKK. Overall this routing still was cheaper than flying directly to BKK plus it gave to option of a stay in Hong Kong.

Sounds good to me.
Quoting HT (Reply 10): the season of the highest air fares from Europe and Award flights almost never available.
The early part of the year is a bad time to plan a meet. We should meet sometime in May or June. The rates are lower at that time of year. Yes it will be rainy and hot as hell but cheaper. Or we could plan a meet in September-October.
I am really suprised that there has not been a A.net meet in Asia. Bangkok would be ideal because it's affordable, gets some of the most interesting traffic as well as all the heavies from other parts of Asia, Africa, Europe and North America.
Yesterday I hung out with Fridgmus. He is a real smart guy and fun to hang out with. We will definately meet up again before I leave.

It's too bad this wasn't happening during March. I'll be in Phuket for 1.5wks, and it's very easy to get up to Bangkok. Oh well. Have fun, enjoy the sights and good food!

Okay, then we are on quite opposite views of things regarding when & why to hold a A.net meeting in Bangkok.
I will only go between November and March i.e. outside the rainy season.
Case closed.

HT:
One thing I forgot to mention. The fares from LAX to BKK on Thai Airways the week I came here was between $2200-$2900 and that is in coach. The fares on United, Cathay Pacific, JAL, Singapore, Air China and EVA were not much better.
During the hot & rainy season, the lowest fare I've seen was about $750.
That is a significant difference in price.

Agreed on the price difference, but still the fact that I would feel too uncomfortable in that weather season is a knock-out criteria during my personal decision-making process.
Have fun in Bangkok !

Well we had a small meet here in Bangkok last week.
Since the spotting at Suvarnabhumi isn't so great, we decided to meet at a restaurant and talk about planes.
How exciting!
It ended up being me, Fridgmus, ChrisTao17 and another guy who I forgot to ask his username.
I do have a photo of the meet but I am too lazy to upload it to my photobucket account at the moment.
I am still serious about planning a meet here in Bangkok in which people have time to plan way ahead for making the journey.
A friend of mines who works at Suvarnabhumi took me to an awesome Thai restaurant just south of the runway in the takeoff path. Many people who work at Suvarnabhumi go here there to eat and socialize. You make your own food on the grille at your table.
I don't know the name of the place in English but it is called อร่อย 99 . Everything is in Thai. The menu, servers and the customers are all Thais, no tourist at all. So brush up on your Thai.

How about a meeting in San Leandro instead?
Still haven't gone to the Philippines? You're running out of time...or are you planning on living there?

Actually Hayward would be a fun place to meet for those of us that can appreciate the junkyard. Me as well as PHLBOS, KevenL1011 and Falstaff wouldn't mind going to Pick-A-Part and watching the DC-8, DC-10 cargo planes as well all of those Southwest
737s come in.

Nice meeting all of you guys. Too bad it couldn't have been at the airport.
We'll plan a bigger meet later on.

27 JGPH1A: I'm really looking forward to it, but with some apprehension - never lived in Asia before, I think it will be challenging.
28 Superfly: It will be a great experience. It shouldn't be a challenge at all as long as you aren't bringing a girlfriend or wife along. LOL! Make every attempt
29 MadameConcorde: I will have a brief stopover at Suvarnabhumi on the 16th/17th of this month, first time ever in this airport. Hello Royal Orchid Spa and Thai F lounge
30 JGPH1A: It looks bloody hard ! I had a look at a few websites that teach Thai language, it looks impossible. I'm normally pretty good at languages - European
31 Superfly: Here is a preview of what to expect. I did it last year on one of their last 747-300s. The Royal First Class Lounge at Suvarnabhumi is out of this wo
