Do you think with all of the bickering that the USA and Russia are doing over everything. One being the Missile Defense System that the United States wants to install in Poland in those old Soviet Military Silos. It seems like with each day passing the United States and Russia are heading one step closer to going back to the Cold War Days. Does anyone think that you might see Russia and the United States provoke each other into starting some kind of Military action? I'm just curious to see other people opinion.

I see Russia as the proverbial leopard that keeps changing its spots. Its recent behavior (Tu-95 bomber sorties, etc) demonstrate that Russia is throwing its weight around like it did during the Cold War. I see Russia behaving like it did back then; the wars in Chechnya and the bullying of former Soviet "republics" don't help Russia's reputation.

I remember all too well that the Russians had their nukes targeted on our cities--even my hometown, Fort Wayne, IN, was a target. I remember all too well the Fallout Shelter sign on City Hall in my community. My childhood was dominated by the Cold War.

So, there is still the spectre of a return of a Cold War-like state between the US and Russia, in the near future.

What if we do indeed get into some kind of war for some reason? What would stop one side from using nukes?

Now that I live in the middle of San Francisco, it looks like a big bullseye for a rain of Russian thermonuclear warheads! Yikes!  eek

Superfly, since you live here too, what would you do if Russian MIRVs were coming in over San Francisco? I live next to downtown (in Mission Bay), and UCSF Medical Center is not far from downtown. So there's no place to hide!  devil

I can just imagine, seeing a bunch of "shooting stars" (incoming RVs) in the sky over my campus, and not having enough time to whip out my cell phone and call Mom at home in Indiana that I'm about to get nuked...

So, what I'm trying to say, is that we should be on guard and keep an eye on the Russians for now.

Wow.....

Of course we're going to stay alert. I think the images of 'incoming RV's' is a bit premature and somewhat fear-mongering. How are we (the US) any way near that precipice? That the Russians are re-starting patrols should lead us to worry? Highly doubtful. I'm glad they have done this....We conduct patrols all the time; why shouldn't they? We patrol, they patrol; we intercept, they intercept. I fail to see a problem with this. If anything, it provides training and lets each side gain a respect for the ability of the other. Neither side would benefit from a 'military action'. Who would gain? What would they gain? Answer: NOTHING. 40+ years of MAD has told us there is no winner in a conflict such as has been talked about here. Jeez.....y'all make me want to watch Dr. Strangelove again.  Silly

Who'd want to hide? The last thing I'd want to is "survive" - should things get really nasty. I'd hope to be lucky enough to have the same fate as those shadows of people on the bridge in Hiroshima that was the "ground zero" who simply evaporated.

In case of a war, true that! I would not want to live through it. Death in that case sounds great.

IMO Russia has a big Problem with their Pride - ones they were a superpower and now they've been humbled . This is causing an overreaction . So this demonstrations of Power are just to show that they're there - But not to take too seriously .
