U.S. Marine Eileen M. Schnetzko stands guard at Bagram airport, north of Kabul March 2, 2002. Afghan troops about 100 miles south of Kabul, aided by U.S. bombing and American advisers, were beaten back in an attack on up to 5,000 al Qaeda and Taliban forces, soldiers back from the front said. The fighting, which started Friday night, was shaping up as one of the biggest battles between the two sides since Taliban and al Qaeda forces were routed by U.S.-led attacks in December. I believe she's manning a M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW). A weapon that can either be use as an assault rifle or, in this case, a light machine gun. It fires a 5.56mm round from a standard 30 rd. M-16 magazine or a 200 rd. ammunition box holding a disintegrating metallic split-link belt.
