Whatever happened to the idea that churches were sanctuaries?

Nothing is sacred, nor a sanctuary to someone with a gun. The people shooting doesn't give a shit who dies, as long as they kill someone.

May those who died RIP and may the gunman pay dearly for taking their lives.

As a UU myself, I can tell you, that we are not always well liked, especially in the south. UUism in the US has become a very progressive, liberal, and accepting movement. Congregations often face alienation in the area, especially closer to the bible belt. One of the UU churchs my youthgroup stays at on the way back from a habitat for humanity trip (we go from morristown nj to sumter south carolina every year) especially has told us of friction in the local community. Its sad that there are people who not only hate others, but hate individuals for not hating others.

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are

Knoxville is not a backwoods town where people cling to their guns and religion with animosity toward those who are different. Knoxville is a fairly progressive town and I highly doubt there are big "community tensions" you speak of as being so rampant down this way; I know there isn't any with the UU church in the community I grew up in an hour from Knoxville.

A gun-toting nutjob is a gun-toting nutjob and shouldn't be lumped in with anything else..at least not in this case.

Ha-ha. Very funny. You must be so much smarter than the rest of us.

Seriously, now...why poke fun? Two people are dead at the hands of some nutjob. That's not God's will.

What sanctuaries? Some church's are vulnerable and some arn't. I would not doubt that the person who did the shootings knows someone in that church or has been there before. Remember earlyer this year with the shootings in Colorado Springs I think it was? My school was put on hightened alert because of this because of information obtained.

My prayers go out with all those involved.

You don't know that it isn't. "God's Will" isn't just for good things.

Shame that these people had to lose their lives, and I hope that the church can pull together and make it through this tough time.

I'd be very interested in knowing what the shooter's motive was.

He hated liberals and gays.

But he loved Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and Michael Savage.

So basically, he took out his own failings in life, on others.
No big surprise there then.

Not for nothing, but one of the victims was an employee of 9E at TYS....

His church has started a memorial fund for charitable works in his honor.

Here's the address if anyone's interested:

The Greg McKendry Memorial Fund for Charitable Works, Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church, 2931 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919.

Greg McKendry

This was the guy who stood up in front of the gunman and took the first blast, protecting the others in the congregation:

Quote:
McKendry .... "stood in the front of the gunman and took the blast to protect the rest of us," church member Barbara Kemper said.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...le/2008/07/28/AR2008072802314.html

I don't know that he intended to take the blast but he directly confronted the killer and blocked his shot. He was a brave man and obviously lived his values.

Interesting story on some reactions of the extreme right-wing upon finding out the gunman was one of them.
