Boy South Windsor has tumbled. My family at one point owned over 300 acres there, but the poor old town is now a poster child for unaccountable suburban sprawl. 15 years ago even, much of the town was farmland, mostly corn, potatoes, and tobacco, now everything is developed with a large set of malls and strip malls now built in South Windsor bordering Manchester. I only know of a handful of large fields still left in the town, one of which is on land that my family rents to a local farmer. Worst of all, tobacco from the CT valley used to be highly sought after, but after the tobacco industry up and dropped the area in the 70's and 80's, all the land was bought by the sprawling population Hartford. The only good news is that the few remaining tobacco farms have seen a revival as of late, and have been able to stave off selling their land.
Although it seems fairly quiet and a far cry from the slums of East Hartford, the town is ridiculously under policed, and although the population makeup has changed significantly towards middle and upper class, the original residents have drifted further into poverty, and many kids over run the town. I've heard horror stories where farmers find all their aluminum and brass irrigation equipment stolen over the night, or even more asinine, kids run them over with their large pickups, crushing them, ruining them all the same, all in the name of "fun". Nearby a school was also set on fire and damaged a few summers ago, by some kids. Drugs are rampant in the town, mainly because so much money is going through Manchester and South Windsor, few cops, and a well connected area that's a stones throw away from Hartford. Hell we've had several hundred dollars worth of scrap stolen from abandoned warehouses. So brazen that my cousin's welding shop, located on the same property was broken in too. The crooks had a heavy duty truck so they could lift up the huge welders. In all about 75k worth of stolen property and equipment. When you ask the cops, they are powerless and completely unable to handle the situation. What a shame to see an old town in the fertile valley, fall prey to Hartford's ills.
