It is going to be a close one between the US and China. China had a strong start but the US still has some big ones coming up - basketball, swimming, and track and field events. China meanwhile will be focusing more on diving and gymnastics but they got gold in several early events.

My prediction: US by 1-2 golds - barely passing China to win it. With some luck China might even upset the US, but it's going to be hard.

I think China will lead in golds, but the US will win the overall medal count. At least I hope so.

I think the US is a lock for the overall medal count, it's just the gold that will be difficult to win. Phelps is going to bring in 7 or 8 golds for the US though - very impressive.

Well, if it doesn't our Government has wasted a lot of money - we have the largest team by far on a per capita basis, and provide significant funds from the public purse to train sportspeople!

When?

They already have - Phelps has already won 2 golds for the US, including the 4x100 mens relay, which is his toughest event. Phelps can win 6 more golds.

Speaking of the 4X100 relay, that was easily one of the most exciting swimming events I've ever watched, especially considering the French hype before the race about how they were going to "crush" the US relay team, only to have Lezak swim the fastest relay leg ever, by far, to come back from nearly a full body length down after the last turn to win the race by a matter of inches. Incredible, I went wild watching it on TV, I can't imagine the energy of the fans in the water cube who got to see it in person, just look at Phelps' face immediately after he realizes that his team won. Magic.

I think that China will win with the most gold, while USA will have the most in total. Australia always do well, but hopefully they will do great this year.

So far China are doing very well, but my biggest surprise IMHO, is South Korea, but how will they do further in the olympics.

The US will very soon - again, they will be winning medals in swimming and many of the track events. Once the main track events start expect the US to start raking in gold medals.

I'm surprised China is doing so well so early, winning medals in many different areas that they are not traditionally very strong at and still holding up in their strong areas (such as diving).

Russia still has not won a gold medal thus far.

That was one of the most exciting races I've seen in a long time. What a finish--and extra sweet considering the French trash talk before the race.

Those slo-mo pics said it all: the thrill of victory (USA) and the agony of defeat (FRA).  Big grin
