First I would like to start out by asking this simple question: Have any of you come to find aviation photography and aviation in general boring? I ask this because lately I haven't felt that little spark, that little bit of excitedness that I used to get when I'd hop outa my car to go to the airport to fly, or even just to spot. Sometimes I try to blame it on the events of Septemeber 11, other times I try to blame it on my dad, and other times i just blame it on having started to fly myself. I'm starting to realize now though, that I can't really blame it on anyone...

This last week I have flown on 10 different flights *ROA-ATL-MEI-LFT-MEM-MCO-MEM-LFT-DFW-ATL-ROA* and while I was at each of these airports, I didn't take a single picture, go into a single flight deck, or even wander around the airports much. I almost felt like one of those disgruntled passengers who just can't wait to get home. I don't know whats wrong with me! Aviation has been my life for the longest time, as many of you more senior airliners.net members know, and for this to start happening to me is so very scary!! I was wondering if any of you have started to feel this way about aviation...or if any of you have any ideas as to how I could perhaps snap out of this scary little hole ive started to dig myself into?!

Camille

In my case I've gone from taking 300 rolls of pictures a year to 2. I haven't taken a picture of an airplane in months.

It doesn't mean you are deficient, we all take breaks from our hobbies.

Damn, this website is getting worse daily.

See, its not only the photography part I think it's all aviation that's starting to get old... I fly a C172 too, and even that's gotten to be somewhat boring..  Sad

I think flying on the same plane/airline starts to make it boring. I think 9-11 kinda screwed things up too for me (along with working a lot).

Wow... its been forever since I last saw you post here.

I agree somewhat with you. I kind of like the strategy part of the business now instead of going out to spot planes and stuff. True, my home airport is 17 miles away from my city center, but even when i am there, I don't feel the huge excitement like I used to, yeah, i do feel that spark a little bit, but not a whole lot.

I think you might just need a break from aviation and simple as that. No one says you have to be a pilot for your profession. Heck, I have no plans on becoming a pilot.

I just think you might need a break.

While of course I don't know what other factors might be affecting you, it's entirely possible that September 11th might be contributing to your declining interest. Aviation in many ways just isn't the same as it was before. There are many reasons why: the closing of many spotting areas, the increased police surveillance - or, some might say, harrassment - of spotters, the heightened security at airports, and probably other things too.
What I'd suggest is sticking with your interest in aviation and not giving up. As time goes on, there'll be less suspicion and tension in the atmosphere and you might very well find your interest growing stronger once again. Just hang in there.

My interest seems to have died down as well. I think this is very normal. People tend to stick to one interest for a relatively short time. Tamagotchis didn't last very long.
My interest in aviation seems to have died down over summer last year. I just didn't 'feel' it any more, maybe just like you. I've stopped playing with my flight sim frequently. I only come to this site to see the non_av discussions nowadays. How pathetic!

Last year, I arrived at the airport a little early and just watched planes landing for 30 minutes. Hk is supposed to be busy but there was little variety. Boeing, Airbus, Boeing.....boring.

I think that it's a natural thing and a real long break would make you interested again. A rule which I follow by myself is that when I'm interested in something, I should persue it in moderation so that I remain interested for a long time. I usually fly economy and whenever I fly business (once every few years), I feel great. If I flew biz all the time, my extra satisfaction would be gone. I went over the top in aviation and lost some of my interest as the satisfaction was gone. Just my personal opinion.
The same thing seemed to have happened to "Titanic". It's one great film which people now say it's crap simply because they became sick of it by overpursuing it.

People tire out after a while. I think giving aviation a loooong break may do it. I can still get satisfaction from my 'sick' flight sim as I only use it every few months.

I think the attack in September has definately affected me, too. I used to go to SeaTac every chance I could get, but since September, the only time I have gone there was to either buy tickets or get on a flight.

I, too, hope to snap out of it, but it might take some time... events like what happened six months ago don't, and aren't supposed to, be forgotten easily. In the meantime, I guess I'll enjoy all my flights to the utmost and keep waiting...

I know what you're feeling, right now my flight lessons are on hold and I haven't been spotting for ages.

I still want to continue my lessons, but I need a break from it. I've got other things going on so I'm in no hurry.
I'm only 21.

However, I am at a crossroads on whether I want to be a pilot as a career, or just recreational. My other business I really enjoy and I'm quite good at it. I can make a lot of money with a lot of freedom as well (I'm my own boss). So I don't know what to do.

Only time will tell.

So don't worry, as said before we all need breaks from our hobbies. Maybe it's just natural, a way of keeping from getting downright sick of it.

Regards,
Kris from YYC

I don't really have any interest in anything anymore except connecting to people. When my dad was alive, it was a way to talk to him. I don't have any friends anymore to go to PDX and talk with, so there is no reason for me to spot. I would go up on the garage and get all excited about what may be coming in next, but now I realize it's either 737, Dash-8 or Brasilia. I think I could use a break too, but I don't want a break from this forum!

Well, I sorta thought it would happen.. I still want to go to an airport, take photographs, get on an aircraft, but its just not the same. I've had quite a few hobbies and I hoped this would be different.

I just hope its just a fade, and I'll be back to normal soon  Big grin
