Remember that super famous National Geographic photo of the refugee with big green eyes staring at the camera.

National Geographic says it's their best photo ever.

Well, they tracked down the woman (she was 13 or 14 in 1984 when the picture was taken) who is now 29 or 30.

Take a look at the picture, it's the oldest looking 29-year-old I've ever seen.

Very interesting. I have to admit there is a certain something, a je ne sais quoi, about the first photo (the one taken in '84).

I'll bet most of us had an easier 1984-2002 than her. Hard livin' there, whew.

It would be interesting to know if National Geographic, which obviously sold many magazines using her image, would be willing to remunerate her.....

Several months ago, at the start of the Afghanistan campaign, I remember reading about "the girl in the photo"; at that time, no one had found her and everyone wondered if she were even alive or not.

Obviously she is, and still has that disconcerting stare.

Johnboy, on CNN this evening they had an interview with the photographer. Apparently National Geographic is going to help her children get an education and help the family to go to Mecca.
They said her situation was bad in '84 and it had gone worse every day since... talk about a hard life...

My teacher showed me that yesterday, very interesting. Oddly enough, I have a National Geographic special photography issue and that photo is on the cover.
Anyhow, I wish her and her family good luck.

Give me a break, I created this username when I was a kid...

Thanks for the info Staffan. I had my doubts when I posted the above, but I've been pleasantly surprised.

I have to shake my head regarding the irony of it all:

A simple, haunting photo of a young Afghan girl stands to open doors for her family, when the Taliban forbade all images of living things during their twisted reign.

Here's hoping for very bad karma for them.
