An ultra-portable, no-frills laptop has beaten the Apple iPhone 3G to win the top title in the first of this season's hi-tech award ceremonies.
The Asus Eee PC also fought off competition from games consoles by Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft to win the gadget of the year in the 2008 Stuff magazine Gadget Awards.
Stuff said the Eee PC has been tipped as the device that could be "the beginning of a laptop-for-everyone era".
The magazine's experts said: "No other gadget has had the impact the Eee PC did this year.
"Now, for less than £300, you can get a fully functional laptop with enough power to do pretty much any tasks you ask it to."
The iPhone was however voted by Stuff readers as the favourite readers' gadget of the year, following on from its predecessor that took Stuff's coolest gadget title last year.
The new Sony Reader, dubbed the iPod for books, took the innovation of the year award.
