Sept 19th every year is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, so go make a complete moron of yourself in the Supermarket or something.

I have taken this very seriously for many years and intend utilising it to the full.

Fortunately, I am not working tomorrow - I can just see it now........

Tower: "G-OACG turn left 285 to intercept the localiser and report established for ILS20, you're number 2 behind a Q400 at 12 miles"

Me: "Ahaaa Jim Lad, splice the mainbrace or I'll hang you from the Mainsail"!!

Anybody know why pirates are called "Pirates"?

The English "pirate" is derived from the Latin term pirata, and ultimately from Greek peira "attempt, experience", implicitly "to find luck on the sea". The word is also cognate to peril. In 17th and 18th century sources the word is often rendered "pyrate". However, the term does not exclusively relate to robbery committed at sea, as other similar origins have a broader definition.

It's a shame 'Talk Like a Pirate Day' isn't more popular. Nobody should have to be made to feel like an idiot for talking like a pirate.

That said, the police are probably not very receptive to it at the best of times  Smile

Arrrr Matey, this be true! But Pirates have been suffering from predjudice and discrimination for centuries. In fact, they are one of the few minority groups that it is still politically correct to ridicule. As we celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day, let us remember that Anti Piratism is a serious problem in our society.
