Bought A TV On The Internet... Big Problem! (rant)

I originally wrote this as a note for my facebook profile but than decided to post it on a.net as well. Maybe there are others here that have faced a similar situation? Sorry that it's so long...  Smile




This past summer I worked at the Vogelweh Commissary (on an American Military Base in Kaiserslautern, Germany) for a few months while I was back home in Germany from college. The pay was awesome ($12.36 an hour to work in the meat department) and I ended up saving almost all of it ($3000+) because I was planning on doing a few things such as having some spending money when I fly from Germany to London for New Years and go from Texas to New York City for 5-6 days at Spring Break. The third thing I was planning on doing was to buy a 40" 1080p LCD TV for my apartment back in Texas.

So after I get my last pay check from DeCA (They run all military commissaries), I flew back to Texas in early August and stay at my Grandma's house in College Station for a few days before I can move into my new apartment in Huntsville. So a few days after I arrive in Texas I'm surfing the internet at my aunts house doing some research on what TV I would want to buy... I had already gone to Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Circuit City, etc. and their prices were quite a bit higher than I was wanting to spend so it was off to the internet to see what deals the wonderful world wide web (say that 10 times fast)  Smile had to offer. I put all the specifics into a website called cnet.com (kinda like mysimon.com which shows products and than which sellers have the best prices) and came across this 40" Samsung 1080p LCD TV at a site called buydig.com. For a little less than $1000 bucks (plus free shipping and no tax) it was by far the best deal I had seen yet. So what do I do? I think it over for a few minutes and than man up and order the thing! My family and I have dealt with buydig.com in the past buy only for small sized items such as digital cameras, camcorder, sound system cables, etc... not an "over sized" item such as a TV.

A point to remember in this whole situation is that it's not UPS or Fed Ex that delivers the thing to me, they only ship it from the buydig.com warehouse some place in New Jersey to a distribution warehouse in Houston run by a company called Manna Distribution. Then Manna has ANOTHER company called Courier USA who actually delivers the thing. So to paraphrase, the TV ends up going through numerous different hands on it's way to my apartment. With this method, there leaves a lot of room for error which is exactly what happened a few weeks later.

A couple weeks later around the middle of August I get a call from Manna Distribution calling to confirm a delivery date for my new TV. At first they give me a time window of the 25th of August between noon and 4 pm. However with me being a college student and all, that's impossible since I have classes during that entire time. So I ask that it be be delivered Friday the 29th since I only have one class that day and it's in the morning. So with all that taken care of it seems that everything's ok right? WRONG!!!

Friday the 29th comes along and I'm super excited about the TV. As I'm leaving my German class and walking towards my car, I get a phone call. It's Manna distribution and there's a problem. It seems like they "lost" my shipment. They don't go into detail but there seems to have been a f**k up in their records keeping department because Manna is saying that they shipped it to the Courier USA delivery people but they're saying that it never arrived. So no delivery possible for the 29th as they "attempt to put a trace" on the missing shipment. So after another week and a half of dicking around on their part, they call me back and tell me that it's "just gone" so they contacted buydig.com who send out a replacement. Problem finally solved right? again... WRONG!!!

So now we're approaching the first week of September (about a month since I ordered it) and I get another call from Manna distribution saying that the replacement TV has arrived at their warehouse and that they wanted to set up a delivery date. Again, since I have class during the available times between Monday and Thursday (they don't deliver on the weekends) I have to schedule it for Friday the 19th of September. So by now you're saying to yourself "is this finally over?" Sorry to disappoint, but NO!!!

It seems like when Hurricane Ike hit the Galveston/Houston area of the Texas coast on Friday the 12th of September, the power to the warehouse was knocked out and was still out by the time the 19th came around so again, no TV for me (Not that it really mattered since the electricity at my apartment was still out as well).

Now I'm writing this note on the 24th of September. About a month since it was supposed to be delivered the first time, and a month an a half since I ordered the thing. About an hour ago, I received a voicemail from Manna Distribution asking me to call them back. So I do expecting to set up a new delivery date. However when I talk to the lady who picks up the phone, it turns out that my TV had been "stolen from the loading dock of the warehouse and that the Police have been contacted". How many things can go wrong?!?!? So I guess now they're going to send yet ANOTHER replacement TV and I have to continue to wait, wait, wait...

HOPEFULLY this one will get delivered... This is their LAST CHANCE. If they f**k up this one as well, I'm just gonna cancel the thing. My dad was saying I should have done it earlier but at the time I was just hoping that this was a one time thing...

I guess this is what you get when it's "Free Shipping"...  Sad

This is why brick and mortar stores will not be obsolete for a long time.

Well the prices I saw when I visited all the stores was about 300 bucks more than I found online. Plus if I bought it in store, I would have had to pay the 8.25% Texas sales tax. Also, I wouldn't have been able to fit the TV in my car or anyone I know. Paying even more for delivery from the store would have been even more... Oh well, I guess I'm stuck with my current 20" Sylvania brand for a little while longer... So in my opinion it was (or will be) worth it...  Smile

I'm hoping you brought this thing with your credit card. I would just call the credit card company and report it as fraud. Explain the situation to them and let the credit card company sort it out.

Most of the time they will force a refund by the seller. Even if that doesn't occur, you should be able to elevate your concerns to a higher level employee.

Sounds like they (Manna or Courier USA) damaged the shipment - or someone may have stolen it from their warehouse. You should call the firm's customer service department that you bought the TV from in order to file a complaint - and also send an email or letter as follow-up to your phone call to cover your a$$. Make sure you get the name and agent number of the person that you speak with! And I wish you good luck in resolving this situation.
