Jesus - I thought that was going to be another one of those 'person where they shouldn't have been' incidents, but not *that*. They must have been on something, the way the one in the reds cardigan seemingly calmly walked out into the traffic after her sister gets hit is just .... uncanny.

Good lord. About 6 years ago, I remember a man trying to run across a controlled access highway in Dallas, TX in the middle of the night. Needless to say, he didn't make it. Unfortunately for me, he chose to play frogger about a 1/4 mile from the exit I took every day and blood stains remain in concrete for some time.
And as often as I think Tazers are over used these days, this is a perfect example of when a non-lethal means of incapacitating a perp is vital to public safety.

They were clearly wanting to get away from the police, suggests they have something to hide...
My sympathy is with the drivers who had to deal with that situation, can you imagine driving at 70+mph, seeing a woman run into the path of your car and by the time you've seen her... you've hit her? It's something I hope never happens to me or anybody else.
As for the thread title, I'd suggest it be changed, this isn't 'jaywalking'... This is stupidity of the highest order.

Quoting Daleaholic (Reply 5): My sympathy is with the drivers who had to deal with that situation,
My first thought was attempted suicide. I've seen it happen a few times in the US and Canada, but here, it's usually people jumping from an overpass onto a highway. Fortunately, it's never happened to me (yet, touch wood), but I know 2 drivers who have had it happen to them. Thankfully, they both recovered from the trauma, and are still driving today. The only such incident I had was with a suicidal moose trying to jump the highway from one rock cut to another.

I saw this at another website I go to. One story is that the women had been traveling by bus and at a rest stop, they were approached by a group of men and felt threatened with sexual assult by them, so fled onto the motorway. It is one of the most horrible police related incidents I have ever seen.
Like many, I suspect they have some seroius mental illness possibly combined with use of illegal drugs or maybe even bad side effects from prescribed drugs for their mental illness. The cops were in a very difficult problem and were being filmed by some kind of police TV program so their options to deal with it was even more limited. Last week in NY City, a cop there 'tazered' a mentally ill man who was nude, climbing on building fire escape and other building parts and after being tazered fell 10 or so feet landing on his head to his death. Of course the cops got into big trouble, the NYPD has to do emergency retraining as to use of tazers of their officers at great cost, in a matter of days a massive civil lawsuit will be filed by the man's family.
Apparently one of the women had been charged earlier in the year with murder, but was on bail pending trial or a plea. I suspect her mental illness/drug use may a factor in that too.
