Merhaba, I was in the Seychelles for four days in September, considering to work there : I was indeed blown away by the beauty of the island of Mahe and some of it's beaches. The Seychelles are more natural, Mahe island is very hilly, very lush. Hotels there are small and no beaches are private, which is ok. If you are looking for a slightly cheaper holiday with more quality service, probably better and cheaper hotel food and more private beaches but a bit less 'couleur locale' then I would opto for Mauritius which, I am sure is beautiful as well. There are so many hotels in Mauritius that the prices, I am told, have gone down. The Seychelles are perfect for Honeymoons.

I've stayed in both, and if I had a preference I'd stay in Mauritius. Both are fine destinations, but I just found that the Hotels (stayed in 4 different ones in Mauritius), were better and a little cleaner in Mauritius. Mind you I've only been to the Seychelles once and therefore can't really compare other Hotels there.
What I do like about Mauritius is that the beaches are great and the Hotels capitalise on this. For the most part the island is fringed by a reef and therefore the water is relatively calm inside. Great for sailing, etc.
The best hotel in Mauritius (sorry can't remember the name) was not too far from the airport. Just to the west of the extended centreline.

I have been to Seychelles only, and liked it a lot. I must say that it's a bit overpriced compared to other tropical destinations, but the quality of the hotel I stayed at (Northolme) was superb and the fauna and flora are amazing (especially at Couzine Island reserve).

I went to the Seychelles two years ago.
Spent relatively few money for a nice, comfortable and friendly hotel in La Digue, by far (for my experience) the best island to stay.
Also had a nice experience in Praslin but the hotel was less nice, though still low priced.
I have found deals online, but can´t remember how.
The sea is the same in Seychelles and Mauritius, the Indian Ocean is probably the best one!
I really loved the Seychelles, the people, the place. I felt in Paradise.
However, you might have to check the weather. I´m not sure if January is rainy or not.
I was in March and I have been told that I arrived at the beginning of the dry season.
