This has been a busy 3 years here in Nevada working full time and going to Embry-Riddle Worldwide at night. I just finished the last 2 classes I needed for my AS in Professional Aeronautics. As it stands right now I only need 23 credits (all electives) for my BS degree Minor in Management which I will be busy working on. My wife also graduated with her MA in Special Ed teaching from the University of Nevada Reno last weekend.

It just goes to show that if you’re determined to do something even married with kids it can be done.

3 more years till retirement from the Navy and I can look for a civilian job that is if the Aviation industry holds up.

Mike

Congrats mike. I bet you and your wife are both happy. I wish you and your wife luck into the near future in whatever job you take.

Mike, huge congratulations to you. We did it before children while living and partying in Manhattan, and it was tough. So I can only imagine how much more difficult it was for you guys.

A huge congratulations to you guys! Hope you uncork a good bottle of champagne and enjoy the moment!

Good work. I got my BA from Cal State Long Beach at age 45, my law degree from Drake at age 48, and my LLm from the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville at age 49, and most of it was due to too many damn layoffs in the aviation field. The last one was from McDonnell Douglas. I am a spry sixty now and just getting into my stride.

My BA came after 3 solid years of working second shift and going full time days.

Thing is, I've never thought it was unusual, creative or showed that I was a special person or deserved some kind of recognition-it was survival.

I am like Columbus-I didn't know where I was going, I didn't know where I was when I got there, and I did it all on borrowed money.

It has been a goal for me. I suppose If I was 20 something I would be elated, however some of the jobs I have had and several overseas deployments in the military slowed my progress. To be frankly honest I have accomplished 50 credits since 2006. I just want to get it done to say I got it.

I look at it as I need my BS to even be somewhat steady or marketable in todays world and that may even change. I had to work my butt off to get everything from my 1st real taxed job at 17 as a summer auto mechanic just to buy the clothes I wanted for my senior year in high school. I was also the oldest child and a lot of responsibilty was put on me growing up.

Similar story. In my case it was child support. I never resented it but because of the need to have that check in the mail every month I simply could not be without a job, and that meant when there was work I'd raise my hand no matter how nasty, dirty and dead ended it happened to be. You can do the math. There were 21 years when I couldn't do a lot of long term stuff that didn't have an immediate paycheck on Friday.

I got my A&P ticket going nights to Northrop Institute for two years from 1978 to 1980. That started putting some reasonable wages on the table but even so we weren't able to afford to be lavish, buy a house or anything like that. New cars? Forget about it. I've had two in my entire life and they were cheapies.

So it wasn't until I got hired on at Douglas that I was finally making enough to pay the support, have a halfway decent car, live in a decent part of Long Beach and get cranking on my BA.
