Hotel Las Vegas - When To Book?

Hi,

I'm going to Las Vegas three nights in mid January.

I'm planning to stay at any of the major luxury resorts, but haven't made any booking yet.
Taken the financial situation in mind, I'm thinking that I may save some bucks by waiting some more? Maybe up to a few days before my stay?

Or is this only doing it more expensive?

Thanks in advance,

Doubt you will save much by waiting I hear all the rates are low as anything now. You can try I don't think it will matter that week doesn't seem to be a busy period. If you want to shoot or spot and need info drop me a PM.

I'm hearing from some folks that Wynn Resorts (Wynn LV and Encore) as well as LV Sands (Venetian and Palazzo) are throwing deals at folks that in normal times wouldn't even get sent room rate offer.

I've even heard that there are deals to be had during the week of CES.

I definitely agree with booking now, but I would also keep an eye on rates in case something better comes along (provided the hotel booking is refundable [some special offers are nonrefundable and cannot be canceled]). I'd even go as far as to register for email offers, as I've gotten some pretty good offers that way in the past (I haven't been able to take advantage of pretty much all of them).

Before I went to LAS I used to frequently check this excellent website/forum:

http://www.fatwallet.com/forums/travel-deals/704925/?start=1940

My observation: the best deals seemed to be published 8-12 weeks before the anticipated date of the trip.

Thanks for the response guys! I'll make my booking tomorrow. I'm thinking of the Venetian. I've heard it's a great hotel with pretty big rooms compared to other Las Vegas resorts. They have a winter offer starting at suites from $ 139 pr. night.. Think I'll og with that  Smile

Would be great to go shooting NIKV69, I'll P.M you if i get the time (only there for three days..)
Btw.. how long is the drive to Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon from LV?

If you're on a tight schedule (and days are short in January)... I say FLY! Either with the Twin Otter or a helicopter.
The views from above are ubeliveable... especially if you take an very early morning flight. We took the airplane (and saved $$$ for a heli night flight over the Strip) - it was amazing and were back in the hotel by 10:00 am.

Yeah! I was already thinking about taking an airplane over Grand Canyon.. My plan was to drive there when we head for Los Angeles, and then hire a Cessna + pilot at Grand Canyon Air or something...

You recommend doing the from Vegas? What about costs? I thnik we will save some by driving there first, then hire a plane?

I would do it from Vegas. Distance between LasVegas and Grand Ganyon (south rim) is something like 450 km. Getting there and back means quite a lot driving even if you leave 2 days for the trip and sleep in Williams, AZ. Add fuel costs, park entrance fee, etc. and most of all the time you spend behind the wheel and
I did GC twice, flew both times. First time, in late 1990s we took a 8-seat cessna from LV with Las Vegas Airlines (now defunct) flew a scenic low-altitude flight through the canyon, landed somewhere near the south rim, took a bus tour, spent some time at the south rim (near the lodge) then saw the imax movie and flew directly back to LV. Last year we flew with Papillon and took the roughly $100/person, 90-minute flight over the GC and the Hoover dam. We got picked up from the hotel very early in the morning, they took us in a minivan to Boulder City and we flew from there. It was amazing, absolutely loved the views, the fantastic colors and shades in early morning light.
I was thinking about driving to the closer West Rim but after reading reviews on tripadvisor.com I decided against it. The widespread belief on the TA forum is that the Skybridge despite being without a doubt an engineering wonder is a major ripoff because you pay a 33 USD pp entrance fee plus have to take a mandatory tour which costs another 70 dollars per person. Plus you can't even take a camera with you on the bridge and supposedly there might be insurance coverage issues with your rental car, because the access is via unpaved road which the insurance usually does not cover. An SUV is supposed to be the preferred type of a car due to the need to drive the stretch of unpaved road to the West Rim.
The 90-minute sightseeing flight seemed like a very good value for money and time spent to me, especially if one is on a tight schedule. I don't know how much the sightseeing flights cost from locations other than LV. For further info try also these forums: http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowForum-g28949-i9-Nevada.html

Hoover Dam is a quick drive but the Canyon is a while. You looking at 280 miles maybe. Best case if you go over the speed limit is 3 and half hours but more likely 4 hours or so.

I'd take $139 at the Venetian. Though I'd opt for the Palazzo, Wynn or Bellagio if I found a comparable rate.

Same with me.

Then again, the big thing for me in Vegas is location. I'm more of a South Strip guy (preferably NYNY and MGM), so I don't mind staying at one of those properties simply because I'm in my preferred location.

Only reason I'm staying at THEhotel next month is that my father is paying for it. When I get a 5-star hotel in Las Vegas and I'm not paying for it, I don't ask questions.

Haha! It's cold enough up here in Norway and I was actually hoping for a climate change!

We have one month available for our trip, and the route is very roughly like this:
5 Days in New York, including New Years eve, then the Acela Express to Washington D.C, stay here for three days, then pick up the car at Hertz, and drive to the west coast... I've checked the weater forecast, and I'm going to bring warm clothing!

At some points of our route, the statistic temperature is fair, but I'm totally satisfied as long as it doesn't rain!

This looks awesome. We are heading for Los Angeles when we're "done" in Vegas.

If it's a big detour to drive via Grand Canyon and/or Hoover Dam from there, it sure is tempting to take this airplane tour from Vegas.
One positive aspect by driving there is that one could drive to different viewing spots and see Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam while "stationary" on the ground. Or is this just waste of time if you already have seen it from a sightseeing plane?

I understand that L410Turbolet recommends Papillon and I'm seriously considering going with them. I've also looked up Grand Canyon Airlines and Air Grand Canyon, but I have no experience with them, nor heard anything about them. I think they operate from a field close to Crand Canyon, so to go with them, we'll need to drive there..

Hoover Dam is a quick half hour drive. Not bad at all, and you can take the tour taking you inside the dam. Very much worth it. Also, just before arriving at Hoover Dam, there's a casino hotel named Hacienda with a good and cheap dinner buffet and fun craps tables  Silly. Anyways, just next to their parking lot is a helicopter company doing aerial tours over Lake Mead and Hoover Dam. If you want both an aerial and upclose view, this is probably the best way to do it.
