Hmm...a new declasse' with "Obama Presidential Coin" or "Inaugural Obama Coin" or "Obama Presidential plates"?

Possibly even worse than John F. Kennedy or Elvis Chenille rugs?

Geeze, I'd almost rather stomach-through another "Hi, Billy Mays here!" hawking job.

Thoughts? ...jack

Did you see how fast they got rid of those World Trade Center coins with made with metal from "the vaults of the World Trade Center".

The New York Attorney General got on them quick and put an end to that shenanigans.

Absolutely disgusting. No one who's living or even recently dead should be on a coin, Democrat OR Republican. Good grief, the guy's not even President yet!

Not to mention the coin is nothing more than a Half-Dollar with a sticker covering it up...

There are companies out there that make various "currencies" to sell to people who are a third tricked into thinking its "real" money, a third excited about whatever the currency "commemorates", and a third thinking they're getting a collectible.

Usually, to legally justify calling it currency, it actually becomes registered currency in another country. Liberian and Samoa are common.

They're in no way, shape, or form associated with actual US currency and have next to no value.

Yep, I love how he invented the office of the president elect and has those signs on his podium, I don't think that even exists. The media just loves this guy. Wonder what they are going to say in 4 years.

They would have some collectible value but depends on how many are sold and who holds on to them. Not to mention if in 4 years we don't have national health care and all this other stuff he is blowing up our ass and loses re-election they won't be worth anything.

I work in downtown Washington DC, about two blocks from the White House. That is not in, literally every street vendor has turned into an Obama gift shop. Anything you could possibly put the man's name on, it's on there...drives me crazy. Even the jewelry vendors are selling Obama clothes and more. I was debating starting a bidding war with them, just for fun..

And don't even get me started on the gift shops near tourists desinations.

As does the old pre-WW1 imperial (the one of the Kaiser) German national anthem
"Heil Dir im Siegerkranz,
Herrscher des Vaterlands
Heil Kaiser Dir!"
...  Wink

We also have some private mints in Germany, which produce socalled "official" collectible coins, which are in fact just worth the metal used to make them. It is just a rip off.

Wow! You learn something new everyday!

I figured that because it was the British national anthem, it was a tune in the public domain and this cheapo mint wouldn't have to pay royalties to the jingle's composer.

Which now makes me wonder.... when was God Save the Queen/King adopted as the official anthem.... given that it was also a German (closely related to the British Monarch) royalty tune....

Cheers!

God Save the Queen/King has never been adopted as the national anthem. It is merely tradition that is recognized as 'official'.

Like God Save the Queen, Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" has been modified to suit many countries. Most of Guthrie's lyrics are left intact--just a few country-specific words get thrown in.

What are all these coins for anyway? They're not really worth anything are they?

Like I said, regardless of party affiliation, you don't belong on a coin. Period.

Don't forget that the German house of Hannover, though not very powerfull by itself, managed to marry off it's sons and daughters into the the royal families of most of Europe. Asa result, pre-WW1, most European rulers were closely related (first cousins).

BTW, the tune of the contemporary German national anthem was written bythe Austrian Joseph Haydn as an anthem to the Austrian Habsburg emperor:

"Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser,
Unseren guten Kaiser Franz..."

Which, following the failed German revolution of 1848 had an exiled revolutionary called Hoffmann von Fallersleben write the new words in praise of a united Germany for this tune.

The tune of the US national anthem started as a beer drinking song in England and had the words written to it by an American POW during the 1812 war.
