Quote: The hunt for an AIDS vaccine, a scientific quest that has stumped infectious disease researchers for two decades, is receiving a $100 million boost from a Massachusetts technology magnate, whose gift will create a Boston institute fusing the expertise of doctors, engineers, and biologists.
Stunned by scenes of desperation he witnessed in HIV-ravaged South Africa, Phillip Terrence Ragon is spending a considerable chunk of his fortune to accelerate research for a vaccine that would slow the relentless spread of the virus that causes AIDS and now infects more than 33 million people worldwide.

It's awesome that he did that, and hopefully some of the finest minds can come together and use that money to come up with new treatments based on new experiments that would otherwise have been too costly! It's about time we got Aids/HIV completely understood and controlled and sorted out. We can map the human genome but Aids/HIV constantly changes and we need to know all the answers and be one step ahead. It's the same with Cancer....we need to know the triggers and the 'carriers' (so to speak) so we can wipe these two awful diseases off the planet....i hope this great mans dontatio helps to further the understanding of this disease and that it goes on to help millions worldwide! Well done sir!

Shouldn't those who invented the aids-virus be the ones that should also know how the cure it ??
The famous story that aids came from some African monkeys is about as credible as pretending it jumped from those monkeys onto humans without deliberate man-made intervention. If it would have been a "monkey virus" ,cases of HIV would have been detected in Africa long before the first cases surfaced in the gay-community in San Francisco and New York.
And that has absolutely nothing to do with conspiracy theories.

More on this excellent news! It's so wonderful to see this level of research gift, especially given the state of the global economy.
"The gift from Phillip Ragon will help create an institute whose first task will be finding an effective vaccine against AIDS.
The Phillip T. and Susan M. Ragon Institute eventually will bring scientists, clinicians and engineers together from the hospital, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to fight a wide range of infectious diseases and cancers.
"Recent scientific advances have brought us closer to the elusive goal of an AIDS vaccine," said Bruce Walker, a physician-investigator at Massachusetts General who will be the institute's director. "But reaching that goal will require broad collaboration."
The hospital will get $10 million in each of the next 10 years. According to hospital officials, the $100 million pledge is the largest donation in the hospital's history."
