I'm going to ATL this week, and I was wondering if there is anything exceptional that I should do or someplace that I absolutely have to go. I'll be staying just two days in Midtown. Also is MARTA reliable for travel between Midtown and the airport, and just how bad is ATL traffic?

MARTA is pretty good try to avoid it at night though. I used it a lot for the whole 2 months I was in ATL last December. There are lots of interesting things to do; CNN, World of Coke, the aquarium, underground Atlanta etc. Try to do a Segway tour if you can - it is the best and the most fun thing I have ever done.

As a resident of Atlanta - I can tell you Marta is fine for traveling to and from the airport...I use it all the time and my partner takes it to work every day. As Springbok stated, probably want to avoid it later in the evening after 10pm.

CNN, Georgia Aquarium and World of Coke are all in walking distance of each other, and you can usually buy a pass that includes tickets to all of them. If you can, try to catch the CNN tour during the week, as you have a better shot of catching one of the anchors in action.

If you can make it out there and handle the cold snap we're having at the moment Stone Mountain is impressive (in DeKalb County). If you're going to be here later in the week then I'd stay away because it looks like we're in for some nasty weather. Kennesaw Mountain is also gorgeous (in Cobb County).

As others have said the World of Coke or whatever it's called is fun, the Georgia Aquarium, if you can, catch a show at the Fox Theater which is in Midtown.

If you enjoy Gone with the Wind the Margaret Mitchell house is also in Midtown.

MARTA is great between Midtown and the airport, but pretty much useless for everything else that isn't downtown. Traffic is entirely dependent on when you're driving. If you're heading out of the city the bad hours are 3-6/7 depending on how far out you're going. If you're heading into the city stay off just about every main highway between 6 and 9.

If you're from LA, New York, or Chicago (or Moscow since you have a Russian flag  Wink ) you won't notice much difference.

1. MARTA is generally safe, even at night. The bigger problem is what you'll face at some of the stations. I've been around Midtown station after midnight and I don't think it's too bad. It will cost you $2.25 to go from the airport to Midtown. If you keep your ticket, then it will cost you $1.75 for all other trips. There's a 50 cent fee you have to pay to buy a reusable ticket, which is why your first ride costs more.

I'll go further than the previous poster and say MARTA is useless in downtown too. If you are staying in Midtown and need to get downtown, it'll be handy. But once you are downtown, everything is a ten to fifteen minute walk. Trains are every seven minutes, so it'll probably take longer to take a train and walk to where you're going than just walking the entire way.

2. As someone has mentioned, there's the CNN Center, World of Coca-Cola, and Georgia Aquarium. These three tourist attractions are by Centennial Olympic Park. While the park is nice, it'll only take about thirty minutes to see.

You may also want to visit the observation deck at the top of the Westin Hotel. Admission to the top is free if you are going to the bar/lounge or restaurant. The food is a rip-off but you might as well eat something AND get a view than pay just for an elevator ride.

If you like parks, I'd recommend Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Botanical Center. There's also a zoo at Grant Park.

3. Traffic is not really that bad. The only time it gets terrible is during rush hour but every city has miserable traffic at peak times. I think Atlantans think the traffic is bad because
most of us spend half our waking hours on the road.
